Hey, check out this really nice program to make 8bit sounds.
You can create fully customizable .wav sounds for your games!
I have used it lots of times and I must say it's really great!
It takes 1 sec to download.

Heres the link:

http://games.softpedia.com/progDownload/sfxr-Download-29920.html

Otherwise, the programs name is SFXR.
Really great if you are making an 8bit/16bit game.
I have used it for my console wars submission

YES! This is a very good program to have for retro sounds! I've been using this one for quite some time.

If it's music you are looking for however, the guy who made sfxr also has an amazing free program called musagi: http://www.cyd.liu.se/~tompe573/hp/project_musagi.html

I'm actually using it this very moment, it's cool once you find you can change instruments!

You can log off any time you like, but you can't ever leave.

musagi would be better if it had an auto-compose feature, like sfxr has a randomize sound feature.

I use this free VSTi plugin
http://www.tweakbench.com/peach
Very very good.
Or if you want more chiptune styled VSTi then check out ReFX's QuadrSiD for $70.
Although its just best to compose Chiptune music in an actual chiptune editor, more realistic, however takes more time to compose I find.

I use this, with some later tweakings in Audacity because every game is going to sound the same now

I saw this on TigSource ages ago and use it all the time. My Neil Peart game uses wavs made almost exclusively with this

I thought more people knew of the existence of sfxr... Hm. It's a great tool nevertheless.

I've known of sfxr for a good while now ... thought it was here at TDC that I learned about it? ... maybe not ...

It's a very good program, anyone who doesn't have it yet should check it out ... easy to use too, so even talentless crazys like myself can figure it out.

Muz - when something is sufficiently advanced, it becomes indistinguishable from magic..

quote of god knows who - Leonard Nimoy quoted it in Civilization 4
