Hey, I wanted to start working on a overhead view game, and I started making a "dummy" sprite (used as the template for people, so just a black and white outline with no details)
Now, I KNOW they look kind of bad, but I'm not that great a pixel artist, I just wanted to know if this kind of thing looked like a guy walking. I want to make a game with original graphics for once.
I was looking at Sabin (from Final Fantasy 3) sprite to get a reference. Which is why his pants are so high (which would be edited with clothing on actual characters)
Though not fantastic looking, it does have a kinda retro-look about it and i would imagine once coloured and in motion, the animation will look pretty fine! (I think this because i used to animate quite similar on a game i started once that was top-down)

The top two sprites do look like running/walking and I think they're rather spiffing to be honest! Has a defo NES/Retro feel I agree.
However I do think the bottom one (the one facing you) looks like that the guy is marching on the spot. (or skating)
I agree with Mark, onced coloured in and in action it'll look alot better
One thing you may want to try for the sprites is to lower the torso one pixel in one of the middle frames. It gives the impression that the body is flexing while walking. Keep the legs & hips at the same position; just lower the upper half of the character's body by one pixel. A slight alteration adds more believability.
Maybe a little "sway" back and forth? Again, the same thing applies: alter frames by one pixel, and there's more motion/less stiffness involved.
Little extras like hair on his head can also demonstrate this concept.
Look bad? That walking animation is better than anything I can do. But the middle walking animation looks faster than the other two so you might want to make that one slower so that it's more in sync with the others
Hmm, yeah i agree about the head thing. Overall it looks good, however i would also suggest making the coat-tails higher up than his feet on the first animation, slightly more "rounded" on the second, and slightly lower than his feet on the third animation, purely to make it look more 3D and less flat, and adding more perspective to the character. Nice all the same though, could just do with a bit more 3D-ness to it
