Today i found my old Dreamcast and all the memories I had with it suddenly hit me. I was pretty young when the Dreamcast was first released, so I mostly watched my brother play it and every once in awhile I got to play it too. I used to think it was sooo cool that the memory card had a screen in it (VMU). I remember stealing it from the controller and putting it in my pocket all of the time just because it was such a nifty gadget . The games I had for it were,
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Gauntlet Legends
Hydro Thunder
Soul Caliber
NBA 2K
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2
Crazy Taxi
Shenmue
Jet Grind Radio
Phantasy Star Online (This game I watched my brother's friend play at his house online and we borrowed it to play offline and never gave it back )
I was wondering if there are any other clickers out there that still have or used to have a Sega Dreamcast and what your fond memories of them are. It was such a revolutionary system that was a shame to see die so fast.
I keep meaning to hook mine back up again. I bought one back in college in 2002ish. Amazing machine really, I got about 30 games (most are original) 3 regular controllers and a FREAKIN arcade stick! Also got a keyboard but never had use for it since they shut off the servers. I just need a VGA cable now so it doesn't look like cack on the TV.
Used to play a lot of Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue, Powerstone, Rival Schools, sooo many Street Fighters, Skies of Arcadia.
I have a weird thing for old consoles that I didn't own (particularly 3D ones) and I remember seeing a friend play it occasionally way back when. I know it doesn't have the best of graphics, but I've always been a fan of games that make do with creating their own style that's not so realistic. I want to play Sonic Adventure.
And so I've kept an eye out for one for some time now. Saw one for $15 at a flea market months ago, but didn't want one then.
There is a lot of love for the Dreamcast. All Of my friends bought one, some even bought two lol.
I was one of the people that waited for the Playstation 2. However I did get the Gamecube ports of Sonic adventure 1 and 2. I love SA1 (even if it's really rather buggy) but think SA2 is a little dull really, I can't pinpoint why.
I bought one off eBay last year - bloody awesome console to add to my collection! My cousin had one when it first came out and some of the games blew me away, Powerstone for one. Now i love House of the Dead 2 with the lightgun - effing brilliant!
Yeah it did - OMC i dunno what you mean by that?! Actually, they weren't quite as good as PS2/XBox/Gamecube, but the difference was very marginal and probably only hampered by the developers. SEGA and other first party developers got the best out of it. The Dreamcast suffered with a lack of storage space (GD-ROM compared to DVD format), and the fact alot of publishers just ported PS1 games to it rather than make Dreamcast-only killer games.
I had a Dreamcast back in the day. I eventually sold it but could buy another one here anytime. The games were good but were very arcadey, i.e. I'd only play them for a short time.
Wasn't the Dreamcast released in America on 09/09/1999? Coming up for 10 years, then.
They were pretty decent, but quite below the Xbox, GC, and PS2 since it beat them all to market by a good chunk. I can't say I'd be sad if SEGA had continued in the hardware race, because I'd bet they would have continued to push forward and our current consoles would likely be even better!
But then again one of our favorite companies may have been knocked out by now. ;o You never know!
The Dreamcast's problem was that it tried too much too early. It tried online before broadband was big, and it tried to enter next gen too early so it wasn't able to capture peoples attention in graphics. Plus it's controller was the bulkiest and strangest most uncomfortable designs I've seen. Despite having some great games, it kind of set itself up for a level of failure. Xbox didn't get too much attention either because it was brand new to the whole scene and despite the graphics being the best of its generation, it was also huge and bulky in both console and controller design. Gamecube did well because of it's very small compact design and wide range of family friendly games and 4 ports made party games very easy and very fun. Playstation 2 did well because it had a foothold on it's past generations games which let people use their Playstation 2 before they even got a collection of PS2 games going, so it had the largest library of games.
I thought the Xbox just pipped the Gamecube overall last generation? Except Japan where it sold about 10. Compared with the sales of the playstation 2 though they both got completely decimated.
Xbox also had awful load times. And though it had technically more powerful hardware, I always thought the Xbox models and animation were pretty crappy compared to PS2 and Gamecube games. (If I remember right GCN and XBOX were very similar power-wise, it was just distributed in different areas of graphics rendering. I do believe the processor was significantly more powerful in the Xbox though.) Probably because it was based off of a PC architecture...
Sega didn't do itself a favor by having all those failures in the 16/32 bit era. What were there, three of them? I had a Saturn a few years back (wish I'd kept it) and there were a few good games for it, but the lack of third party support kind of showed since the good'uns were few and far in between. Dreamcast was even more that way.
If you count the Megacd (Sega cd) 32x and Saturn as flops, then yeah i guess they had three. There was also the Sega Nomad and the Master system was only popular in europe and later on in Brazil. Also the Pico which was kids toy but underneath was just a Megadrive, not to mention countless other hardware variations of the Megadrive/Genesis that probably cost lost more money than they made.
