Scratch
Seems to be at least 2 years old, so I'm not sure why I'd never come across it before.
Looks kind of like a much more basic and colorful version of MMF, designed (by MIT) to help teach children programming. It's free too, which is nice.
Stencyl
This one's been mentioned before, but it was in "stealth mode" so nobody knew much about it.
As of yesterday though, they have started private beta testing, so maybe some of us will get to try it out if we all sign up?
There's a ton of other really great unknwon game programming software that somehow stays under the shadows.
After experiencing with many of some good'n'bad programming software, i can only come to the conclusion the best by far is one by clikteam (the creators of MMF) wich is called Jamagic, it's really powerful and intelligent, and it allows you to work in 3D too!!
i made really awesome games with jamagic, my current project is called fluffy universe

Lmao! Jamagic is the way of the future.
I don't really use any other game development software besides MMF2, but I've seen some games made with LOVE ( http://love2d.org/ ) and it looks pretty easy to use. I tested the engine out myself, so if you want to try something else give that a go.
Thanks a lot for the link to that LOVE thing - I've downloaded it and will definitely be giving it a go
I think it could be exactly what I'm looking for - kind of like Java (which I'm also currently trying to learn) but with all the graphical stuff made much, much easier.
I will report back my findings in due course...

The thing that makes me laugh here is how he said Scratch is a more basic MMF and it helps teach CHILDREN programming. Maybe thats why its not as powerful, no?

Last I recalled, MMF evolved out of KNP, which was used to teach children too. MMF still uses some arbitrary values for direction and speed, dragged over from KNP
