It's sometimes easy to forget why I enjoy making games, when I'm neck-deep in fastloops and arrays, or trying to make sense of MMF's object selection logic. There are times when my sense of achievement comes from overcoming development issues rather than producing a finished game.

Today I was reminded of why making games is so rewarding.

Out of curiosity, I searched for my own game on YouTube today. To my surprise, I found some reviews and videos of people playing through the game. I greatly enjoyed watching them give a commentary as they played it. Many failed a few times, but kept trying even though it's quite difficult and doesn't include any continues. I hope I can express how encouraging it was to watch someone else enjoy my game and root for them as they struggled to beat it.

I've embedded one of the videos below, but you'll probably not find it as interesting as I did. Try searching for your own games - you may be surprised! I'm not writing this to boast about my game - it's neither a "classic" or hugely popular - but that makes me all the more grateful that some people took the time to record their own videos to share with others.

My appreciation right now goes out to everyone who takes time to encourage developers, via video playthroughs or even just positive comments. For a game developer, there's no better feeling than seeing someone else enjoy the results of your hard work.

Congratulations Yeah things like this are really encouraging. That's one of the positive things about TDC, you just post your game and within a day it ends up on several other sites, gets reviews etc And of course, it's always interesting to see how others see/play your games.

I hope this encourages you to make more little falafel type games Nim

Stuff like this is really cool, I had a little look for some of my games and there's a hilarious play-through of Paroxysm (KF plays Paroxysm). It pleases me to hear true frustration in his voice. It's definitely encouraging to make more (evil) games.

Good stuff

I remember a kid did a play through of one of my games on YouTube, and i felt really good about knowing people actually have the game and are playing it. The account is gone now though.
I didn't like how much slowdown there was on his pc though, but some real time video capture programs are processor hogs.

That's the same way I felt whenever I saw people doing speed runs on my Portal maps.

Yeah, when this happens I feel all warm and gooey inside. Someone made a 5-video walkthrough for Mr Stump's Dentures, God knows how long it took him to become good at the game, but I do appreciate the effort some people go to.

I haven't had the feeling of getting my game played on YouTube yet, but I've seen my articles linked to from other sites, even translated. But still, this is just about the highest praise you can get. Not reviews, not GOTWs, but someone actually having fun with your game.

Congratulations Although I've never finished a game (and my Stupid Ape game doesn't count considering the amount of bugs in it), I have put up a video or 2 on youtube of my game(s). I've gotten some positive comments and some "how'd you do that?" comments, but people playing through your game and recording it is so much greater than that, so yay for you
