The more I hear about this, the more I feel like this is less of an accident and more like a brilliant viral scheme of Apples, to raise hype about the new iPhone. Think about it, what are the chances of this just happening the very moment Apple decides to give the iPhone it's first real visual make over, while at the same time, phones like Droid and Nexus one are giving it strong competition.

If this is true, and this is all a viral scheme, I will stand up and openly applaud Apple.

I dunno. Unless they're using reverse phsychology, hoping we'll think it's too obvious and then think they wouldn't do that, therefore making it a covert viral ad campaign, it doesn't seem to be that to me.

Calling leaks strategic is hit and miss. Sometimes maybe they are. But the idea certainly isn't new. It's not like they need a ploy. People would be all over the next gen iPhone anyway.

The device itself looks neat, but I'm getting a Microsoft-y vibe about it. It's not Apple-curvy.

It crossed my mind too, but I think Apple is perhaps literally the last company in the world who need to raise hype about its products. It's not like people aren't going to buy the stuff anyway.

That's true, they may not be in any threat of running out of money and going out of business, however they are losing a significant amount of money through competition. The iPad is a success but not a huge success, and the Droid and Nexus One are just ripping apart the iPhone base. The app market is exploding a multiple times the rate of the iPhone app marketplace.
It may not be as pretty, but people are realizing that other devices are in fact capable of more and they're on more reliable networks, which is why Apple lashed out at HTC out of no where for pattens which have been violated for a long time now. At the same time, Apple is releasing an iPhone for Verizon. Of course Apple isn't being threatened out of the market, but they're defiantly losing a lot of it because the functions of their 'Jesus phone' are becoming very typical of smartphones in general. Especially Android devices.

That's interesting. Is this how it is in America? In the UK market (not that it counts for much in the grand scale of things) the iPhone is running away with it, and in Japan, it's becoming extremely popular despite being on a crappy network. I don't think I've ever seen a Nexus One.

I still don't think it's Apple's style to resort to viral marketing, especially not for a small product update like this. Apple's marketing has forever been Steve Jobs on a stage trying to make you feel like your life is incomplete if you don't buy their latest product, and it certainly seems to have been working so far. Like accusing Nintendo of doing the same thing: it's just not their style.

In the past month, the amount of Droid's I've seen has done from me myself and I, up to almost every direction I look, at least one person has one. I've seen at least two Nexus Ones and even though I still see a lot of iPhones, the majority of people with the iPhone are generally younger, female, and/or Apple enthusiasts. So with regards to smart phones, Android is taking off with a very strong foothold.
In the words of a friend of mine who just a week prior, boasted how much he loved his iPhone, after seeing my Droid he told me he highly regretted not waiting just a little longer and getting a Droid instead.

Heh, viral marketing is the new trend. Not at all surprised if it is. I've seen some great viral ads lately. But it's not Apple's style.

Man, and I just have one of those boring Nokia smartphones.
