I have both a VC20 and a C64. They were the best things. You could start propramming on them just by typing your lines in. And the C64's game library is legendary.

Kind of sad that is the first news I have heard of Tramiels passing. Nothing on the UK news, yet when Steve jobs passed we had constant news footage, even of iphone lit vigils ... (depresses me that such a user-base needs to mourn someones passing with a product!)

Tramiel was responsible for a lot of good things too.

In America when most computers were ridiculously expensive (Over $1000) he undercut the competition by an absolute mile. Couldn't quite do the same in the UK where Sinclair were churning out colour computers at £125 .

Oh and later on he bought out Atari and got them going again for a while. If I recall he was responsible for getting the Atari st range off the ground.

Opinions on him are pretty divided among Atari fans, half of them praising him for turning the company around, the other half hating him for cutting down on the video game division.

BTW, VIC-20 came out a year before the ZX Spectrum. But of the two the Spectrum is the more capable (there's something you don't hear often!!!)

Most people compared the Zx Spectrum with the Commodore 64 anyways. The Spectrum was much harder to program for but as a result the more talented programmers worked on it.

I have been playing Dizzy on my ZX Spectrum (48k rubber key). I am surprised of what it is capable of, considering how basic the hardware is.

I have not missed the frustration of loading tapes mind!

...and unlike the other computers, tape was pretty much the only option for Spectrum owners (at least until Amstrad bough Sinclair and put out their 3" disk drive for it)

They did have cartridges and microdrives but you needed to buy adaptors for both of those devices and very few games were actually released for them.

The C64 on the other hand had a cartridge port built in. But of the 10,000s of games released for it very few were carts. Disk drives were very expensive. Tapes were the way to go for most!
