First of all, sorry if this is a silly question.

I've just been looking at the graphics for my game and I feel that they look great if I limit the overall colour count to 16. Obviously details are lost, but it really gives a strong NES vibe I think. I'm wondering if there is a way for me to only import the detailed graphics, then have an event in the game which will lower the max colours displayed. I'd like to be able to change between a NES/SNES style if that makes sense. This game is planned for iOS, which probably limits things.

Is this possible?

I'm pretty sure it's not possible with normal MMF but you might be able to fudge it with some shader effects (threshold?) I think they work in iOS but then again I'm not sure.

If it is possible, I'm not sure if it's necessarily preferable. Graphics made for NES and SNES or any platform with limited colors, were made with the limited color palette in mind. They were artistically made to not only work around the limitation in colors but work it to their advantage. Something a simple conversion or low level pixel shader wont be able to do as effectively. I'm sure a pixel shader could be made to emulate it based on your own personal preferences, but after so much effort, it might be questionable as to whether or not you would've just been better off making separate sprites with limited color palettes to begin with.

Thanks for the words Silveraura. I understand completely what you're saying, I love working to specific colour pallets and like to think carefully about which colours to use.

I'd never actually considered this until I accidentally saved out my entire sprite sheet as a gif with just 16 colours. With the exception of just one graphic, everything actually looked really good - That was what got me thinking about this in the first place. I guess I just got lucky!
