Just a mini-rant really to see if anyone agrees.

I love the idea of games having achievements - its a cool way of adding passive side-quests or recognition of your awesome skills into games.

However, I hate it when a game has achievements along the lines of "Beat Level 4-2". What does something like that add to the game? An achievement you are forced to get upon playing through a game's campaign. I just don't see the value of adding achievements that don't require any additional effort on top of what the player has to do to progress anyway.

Things like "Beat over 100 enemies in Level X" or "Complete the level only using jump attacks" - good.
Things like "Complete the first level" - terrible.
Things like "Beat all the levels in the game" - perfectly fine if some levels are optional.

Just what I think anyway - what do you all think?

I agree with you to a point. The idea of achievements is bragging rights, plain and simple. This is why 90% of games have standard, complete level x, achievements. I mean even COD:Ghosts has this feature. The other achievements such as "kill 150 enemies whilst crouched with this weapon" add a playability and longevity factor to the game that enhance the features. So to answer your question, I think both types of achievements are valid and acceptable.

What he said.

If you're into Achievements, then embrace them for what they are and go all-out. Big-budget game studios wanted to inflate the replayability of their games, and Achievements were born. You want to play with the big dogs, I recommend you follow suit. If you don't, they'll be blasting you for not including them.
