I'm making a small breakout/alleyway style game to go in the Vitalize Arcade section of my website (when it relaunches sometime soon), and I'd like to get some more ideas about what sort of features it should have in terms of powerups and different types of brick etc. Hopefully I can then make it slightly more than a boring clone. I've already got quite a few, like lazers, missiles, multiballs, fireballs, moving bricks, solid bricks, explosive bricks and a few others.

Please post any ideas you might have here, no matter how wierd or wacky you think they are. You'll get full credit in the game if I use your ideas, of course.

Ball-movers (like arrows), themed levels, correct spelling of lasers, gravity ball, multi-paddles, big paddle, a small green frog called Ycric, perhaps some sort of door/key system.

Shen, could you explain what you mean by ball-movers and gravity balls? They sound fun, but I'm not quite sure I understand them. I like the idea of a frog called Circy backwards though

Bosses are a possibility Joshtek if I find I need a bit more variety, although I'll probably stick to just normal levels to start off with.

Thanks everyone, keep them coming!

Brutal brick
a brick turns against your bat as an enemy bat
it activates when the ball hits it
after like it 2-3 times it hits back the ball it explodes

Ball movers: things on the playfield that shift the ball about a bit.
Gravity: Make the ball fall back onto the paddle. Surely you're using a custom movement (I seem to be going on about them a lot this morning)

Anyone every played an old breakout game by the name of Popcorn?

That was the first break out game I ever remember with powerups. Basically you'd hit special blocks and a letter would fall down, and depending on that letter would correspond to a powerup.

The ones i could remember were, wide-paddle, sticky paddle, multi ball, shooting paddle, extra life, and a floor that would be created along the bottom for a certain amount of time.

Heheh... I remember that game. I can't remember how much time I wasted trying to get that game to play at a reasonable rate. Then one day, I discovered that my computer had a Turbo button which was what made everything so impossibly difficult.

Ah, the good old pre-internet days...

Pre-internet days?

Muz that was pre-Windows days, unless you were some kinda wierdo, pre-Pentium days, hell, that was pre-VGA days! That's how old school that games is!

And if funny to try and run it on a 2Ghz Althlon! I don't even reckon Neo (from the Matrix Neo, not you Neo) could play it!
