I was wondering how people do this. I personally have it like when the user presses a direction, the player character's value A is set to 32. Then if have it so if value A is greator than 0, the character moves and 1 is subtracted from value A and the player control is ignored.
If value A is 0, the player gains control.

How have you guys done this, i wonder ?

You basically explained how to do it... then asked how to do it... CONGRATS!!!

Well if you are trying to do what I think you are, that way is pretty much the standard way in my books... but then again I have absolutely no idea what your trying to do... HINT

I'm trying to make a character move like in Final Fantasy, where, if you press a direction, your character walks 32 pixels in the direction you wanted him to, and even if you press another dir, he won't change the dir until he's done walking the 32 pixels...

Why didnt you say that?

I would be more inclined to have the alterable value store the position that the character is moving to, rather than the number of pixels. Then you can do: IF ALT VAL A < XPOS(MYCHAR): MOVE X = X - 1, etc. But hey, that's just me.

I always use the "A > 0" method you mentioned. It's fool-proof, really, and easy to understand/do

It's not fool proof actually.....either that, or I'm a fool

anyway, i used that system for a game, and my character would stop in the wrong places, but only sometimes...oh well
