Hey guys, as some of you may know E3 is going on now and on thursday as well. Here are the latest photos of the nintendo DS:

Not to mention Shigeru Miyamoto:

(large picture)

It's coming out near the end of the year, and it's other competitor is the PSP:

I'm most likely going to get the Nintendo DS because it's coming out at christmas time which is when I am going to Malaysia and it will be cheaper over there.

BOTH CONSOLES FEATURE 3D RENDERING!
With the PSP being as powerful (if not more) as a ps2

New info:
Nintendo DS has wireless capabilities which will be active for over 30 feet! This allows up to 16 player multiplayer.

NINTENDO DS WILL BE MORE POWERFUL THAN NINTENDO 64! So we can probabley expect some nintendo 64 to Nintendo DS ports.

Both consoles WILL fail. As we saw with the N-GAGE, no matter how powerful your machine is, everyone who wants hald held gaming has a GBA or simply can't afford a gba or anything else.

Yes sony has a massive user base, but the ones who want to play games on the train have GBAs.

The DS on the other hand is doomed because of its quirkiness, anyone remember the virtual boy? Even though nintendo is cool.

The only machine there that is likely to succeed is the "Shigeru Miyamoto". This is the first time a game machine has been incorporated into a crazy japanese guy who owns EAD, and such is bound to succeed. And photos of the special limited edition "Zelda Shigsy" look cool.

funny i was talking with my mate about this last night.

i strongly believe the PSP to flop and the DS to be very good. Why? let me first say that i was looking forward to the PSP (if it at least plays portable PS1 games im happy) and dreading the DS (gimmicky?).

but now my mind is set. There are so many faults with the PSP. ie; battery life! 8 hours IF the disc dosnt load? 2 if its always loading from disc (UMD, 1.8gb, similar size to minidisc [big!])? that really is pathetic. Also i dont understand the MP3 side of it. it promises 10 hours with MP3? 1) you cant record onto that new CD they've made. 2) 32mb RAM is good enough for what? 5 mp3s? 3) they will probably make you use the memory stick slot which is blaintently expensive cuz hey! its sony! but Memory Stick is also huge, hell you might as well get an i-Bead200 MP3 player for cheaper (14 hours battery life too)
Its also bloody huge. To say this is sony's only handheld offering its kinda sad.
the only good points i can see is the wireless abilities but GBA can do that (new adapter coming out)and DS and probably GBA2. Also that screen on the PSP is gonna get destroyed in most peoples pockets, if it fits.

The DS sounds much better than i first anticipated. The bottom screen is touch sensitive, it has microphone and wireless capabilities, plays regular GBA games, has pokemon, mario, metroid and zelda games coming out (Pokemon with wireless abilities is the perfect combination :|)... but if that fails, hell the GBA2 comes out in 2005/6

what it seems like to me is Nintendo are genuinly trying to put some new never-before used features in a handheld console yet Sony (apart from the CD drive) are just making something less-cutting edge.

all the DS has to do is get Zelda 64 and Mario 64 and its a sure winner

The reason why the N-Gage failed is because there were no good games for it.

Sonic-N: This was already released for GBA. The strange screen proportions make it almost impossible to see where you're going.

Tomb Raider: You call that 3D? The textures aren't even mip-mapped! Besides, this game was probably already released elsewhere.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater: If you want a Tony Hawk gameo on your system, at least do the third one. I mean, the first game's pretty obsolete right now.

As for the DS, I'll want to buy that when it comes out. The N64 was pretty fine with 3D (Although frame-rates were crummy), although it really excelled in 2D.

The reason why N-Gage failed:

1. Waaay too expensive. You're basically paying for a PsOne all over again

2. Its a huge inconvenience when trying to change games. You have to unscrew the N-Gage to take the cart out, put a new one in, and screw it back together again.

3. Its fugly.

I'm looking forward to the PSP more than anything else. The Nintendo DS looks more like a gimick than anything else -- 2 screens, woohoo. It's 3D effects are about on par with a Nintendo 64, which is good, but pails in comparison to the power of the PSP. And before you say anything about specs not meaning anything, take a look at the PSP demo reel (the in-game graphics look to sit somewhere above a Dreamcast and just a bit below the current generation of consoles), then compare it to the screens of Mario 64 x4 and Metroid Hunters... it should be plain as the mud on your face which system is more powerful. This isn't to say that both cannot co-exist.

Now then, some of you mentioned the N-Gage failing. Well, that's because Nokia doesn't know anything about gaming, it had a miserable launch line-up, and it cost what... 300 friggin' dollars?!? On top of that it was nothing more than an ugly cell-phone that had sex with a Sega Saturn. DS and PSP won't fall victim to that. Nintendo knows it's audience -- the existing Gameboy fanbase (DS is backwardly compatable), and kids. DS's relative lack of power compared to PSP will likely be reflected in a lower price point (I'm guessing $99) which is more accessable to kids. PSP, on the other hand, is being targeting at the older crowd -- the new Walkman of sorts. The installed base of the Playstation product line is something like 25 million in America alone. The Sony name is a pretty big seller...

Now I could be wrong -- I won't deny that. Sega had a vastly superior product to the Gameboy back in the day with their GameGear. It fell flat, despite sales numbers of the Genesis that reached nearly 20 million units. Times have changed tho -- gaming became mainstream and cool with the Playstation, and gamers that were 10 when the playstation launched are in college now, with a larger budget, and want gaming on the go. Nintendo, as I mentioned earlier, is associated with kids -- like or not, bad thing or not, they are. PSP can appeal to this older generation of gamers, and co-exist alongside the Nintendo DS since they won't be competing directly.

If nothing else, Sony has a killer line up of software going for the PSP that will get it out the door fast: Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Acid, Grand Turismo 4, Tales of Eternia, NFL and NBA Street, Need For Speed Underground, Viewtiful Joe, and an unannounced title from Square just to name a few.

Oh, and Assault Andy... if you're going to post a screen of the PSP, at least get your shit together and post one of the new design...

Ive always supported sony and i still do.The psp is going to be the best portable gaming device yet.The Ds looks good but you know its going to be really expensive. Also sony hasn't realy made any mistakes on thier systems as far i know besides making the ps2 have only 2 controler ports instead of 4.But as you can see the gaming industry is playing follow the leader and sony is currently the leader and i think it will remain that way.Any way why would i pay alot for a system thats as powerful as the 64 when i can pay less or the same amount for a system thats just as powerful as dreamcast with better games on its line up imagine playing gt4 hendheld...*drools* Also the psp will be able to fit in your pocket unless your wereing really really tight pants.

yea the DS seems gimmicky but hell my sony-loving mate has pretty much given up after reading the stats and looking at it logically. It seems to just be another all-in-wonder machine that costs the same amount as all built-in devices but together but half the quality. ie. N-Gage?

what makes me think it should NOT exist at all is the measly battery life.. i mean cummon? 2-8 hours? that really is quite crap. if the DS, even GBA2 has a similar battery life id say the same about them too im not being biased.

but if stats are your thing; the GB destroyed the GameGear, the PS1 legally murdered the N64, the GB name alone is the best selling portable console. but meh. alls far in love and war.

By the way: GameGear battery life was about 10 seconds. GameBoy lasted 5000x that time... and it won. So naturally PSP is doomed to failure.

If they rerelease SOTN for that new GBA, im getting it. But im not paying for the psp, looks like the buttons will get jammed way to easy, notice how thin and close they are to the actual system, thats how the buttons on my digital camera+MP3 player+ CD player were, all the buttons jammed after short amount of use.
