Personally, I hope they completely scrap what they were planning on doing (making the character's older, changing their names, they spell Rei's name like Ray from ghostbusters for gods sake.) I've heard that's what their doing, but not too sure. The Images from WETA Workshop (LOTR) are awesome looking though.
Okay, it's only in early preproduction with Weta in at the moment, they don't even have a director yet. I've been watching the forums there (I know you made this topic after reading what I said in the multimaze preview) for a while now, everyone there seems to be pulling their hair out over nothing. Here's the deal:
- Making the character's older: ADV have commented somewhere that there's 'thousands' of pre-production sketches finished. The public has only seen a dozen or so. The first and second child's plugsuit pics are drawn by costume designers. Just because they put it on an older girl doesn't meen they're going to be older. I've always worried about that a little in the series - no 14 year old I know has breasts as big as Asukas. Now, you may be a lolicon fan but personally I'd rather they made them a little older so they could have professional actors with BOOBIES (for live action anyway).
- The character names: they're written on those pics by the artist, not the screenwriters. Character names change all the time in pre-production, and this is EARLY pre-production. Even if someone does have plans to change the names, once they hire a director he's going to step in and say "Ehat the fuck were you thinking? Change them back." I guarantee you this.
It's not an issue anyway. Look at that pic that says 'RAY.' Look at ger sleeve. It says 'Rei Ayanami.'
Personally, I think RAY and KATE ROSE are the artists, since those suits are so much different from the series there's probably a bunch of artists trying out their best designs. I imaging there's a KATE ROSE Rei and RAY Asuka out there somewhere, they just haven't been released.
I should probably sign up there and post this for those melodramatic lunatics.
Anyway, I am really, really looking foward to it. The new evas just look amazing. Ecept maybe for they way their teeth are external. They should be hidden (on units 00 and 02 anyway) like in the series and only become exposed when they go berzerker and break the armour by opening their mouths. Did you see the 'rogue eva' pic? Looks to me like unit 00 is going to get infected. Sweet.
I think those sketches rock. I really like NGE, got the series on dvd and such, and I really like the preprod-pictures that have been released. I have no problem with making the characters older - in fact, I hope that this will make the whole movie seem to be more serious (p.s. boobies etc.) - and the name changes are no big deal, too. I'd prefer if they kept the old names though (what they are probably going to do anyway).
Ok, couple of comments.
@ Radix - I know a few 14 year olds with breasts as big, if not bigger than Asuka's. Also, to me part of the series deals with the coming of age of the pilots, 14 is a good age for the reactions seen in the series to sex, attraction, dealing with father complexes, etc. I just hope they don't change too much, as the series is good as it is.
