If its a major slowdown at the start of a frame your talking about then no, you cant make a "Proper" loading screen.
If its say for example your creating a few objects in random positions at the start of the frame and they wont instantly be created, then you can.
It IS possable to make a screen that signals the game is loading. No animation, but it does do the trick.
Make a screen that says Loading, & at the Start of Frame jump to the next frame, if the name frame needs to load, it will freeze on the page that says loading because it was the frame it was comming from before it needed to load, till its done loading. Normally loading times arent long, but a loading screen is a nice touch, so long as they dont act like they are loading something more then they really are. (Make a bar that takes 5 seconds to load which its not loading nothing.)
yeah, fake loading screens are stupid and annoying. if there's a long (over 1 second) pause between levels, try what Brandon said, otherwise don't bother
"Say you're hanging from a huge cliff at the top of mt. everest and a guy comes along and says he'll save you, and proceeds to throw religious pamphlets at you while simultaniously giving a sermon." - Dustin G
I usually have a Loading message, cos my games are usually graphic intensive and can take up to 10 seconds to load. It can be a nice little touch, and it reassures the player that the game hasn't in fact crashed or something.
Yeh my online game required a loading screen because of the .mod music, without it it allows players who have faster connections to have a longer time to score.
Midi has a weird effect on my comp, im running some Intel mobo thats got really good sounding midi but it takes a 10 seconds to load up sometimes. so midi swapping in levels is a pain. as is midi. VIVA LA MOD
oh yea. loading. if your using large external data files its always good to put in a loading screen if only for a split second. what takes half a milli second on one computer could take a minute on another. like on Doom 3;
"we sent a robot through the teleporter... but it delayed when it was being sent. we attached a camera and we saw what could only be desribed as 6 eyes looking right at the robot" yea its not an exact quote. but ill shuttup now. and loading times have nothing to do with that in Doom 3 at all
