Okay, people have been saying Directsound is slow, doesnt work, crashes, generally crappy etc. and now I am inclined to agree; looking at the source I wrote over a year ago, it's very crappy, inefficient, wrongly done etc. which explains a lot of the problems.
So firstly, sorry to everyone who is using Directsound at the moment, and apologies for any inconveniences.
Secondly, there is better news - since I wrote Directsound I've gotten a lot better at programming, especially Windows-based/MSDN-documented stuff. So currently I'm working on Directsound 2, which actually uses the right SDK this time, and also supports a whole load more cool stuff, is actually stable, fast, works, etc. (I've made a lot of effort to crash-proof it, and so far my tests have all worked fine and stable)
DS2 will have things like panning in positional sounds (not just volume), plus you can attach sounds to objects, so panning and volume change accordingly during the sound as the object moves around - real-time sound positioning. It sounds great, I've already got that working.

Plus it has per-channel frequency setting (speed up/slow down sound), and the SDK supports effects which apply to only one channel, multiple effects on one channel (e.g. both flanger and echo), hardware acceleration, streaming, capturing sound from a microphone, full duplex (playback while you record), and a couple of other things.

So yeah, any existing Directsound users, sorry you have to put up with things like built in reverb. Something better is on its way.

That sounds very, very awesome. Especially the bit about attaching positional sounds. Woo.
