Uploading Downloads
News posted 11th January, 2005 by David Newton (DavidN)
Hello again, it's an update from me and my shiny head. There have been a few downloads with problems recently, so I thought I'd avoid studying for my impending exam for a while and give a couple of pointers for new people on what to do when submitting a file.

  • Keep your filenames (including the extensions) lowercase. It may not matter in Windows, but many servers run on systems that are case sensitive to file names. If a file name only has lowercase letters then you get rid of any confusion.
  • Similarly, don't put spaces in filenames. It causes nothing but trouble, to be honest.
  • This one's been said a lot, but here it is again: Unless your game really needs it, which is a rare case indeed, don't put it in an installer - just create a ZIP file with the EXE and any essential files inside (for example, GAM is also needed if you're a TGF user). In fact, I prefer it if the ZIP file contains a single folder that has the files and any subfolders you need inside - that way, 'installing' it is simply a matter of dragging it to another folder window.
  • Choose a host that allows people a decent transfer rate and won't run out of bandwidth if a couple of people download your game. Search the articles for host recommendations.
  • Once you've got it online, do make sure that your download works. Before hitting Submit on the New Download form, copy and paste the URL you've provided in to your address bar and try and download it yourself - that way you can tell if you have the wrong link or if it's somehow been corrupted.
  • Don't forget about screenshots. If you really can't find a provider that allows remote linking, provide the URLs to them in the download text.

Downloads have to be approved by an admin before they show up in the list, to make sure things work. If there is a problem with a download then an admin will make a comment on the download page - check back using the User Admin link on the left if it's been a day or so since you submitted something and nothing's happened. Non-working downloads are usually deleted within a couple of days to clear up the list.

If you want your download to get on the front page, provide a decent amount of screenshots and a full and detailed description. Impress us!

Use your ISP as a host: http://www.create-games.com/article.asp?id=651

The only thing that I do right in that thing is that I do not make installers.

Wow! Your head is shiney! :O

Well I'll be using an install for Diamond3D & ChaosKeins2 because they have alot of external files that InstallCreator compresses really well. My ZIP compressed CK2 down to maybe 20MB, InstallCreator took it down to 18MB, might not be a huge jump, but every MB counts. Other then that, its about time all these are posted right on the home page for people to see. Nice. :-)

The tragic thing is that this news post is about twice as long as any revision notes I've written.

Ah! its fred dursts Head! ;)

Posted by X_Sheep 12th January, 2005

It is? I thought it was Wong's head.

Posted by ChrisB 12th January, 2005

No, it's the WRONG head.

I don't look like Fred Durst, do I? If I do, I might be forced to grow my hair to avoid it.

Posted by jast 12th January, 2005

I absolutely don't see what's wrong with installers.

Posted by Jason Orme 12th January, 2005

Wong, then you would look like me and be mistaken for a 80s hair metal frontman. There's no pleasing some people.

I don't see what's wrong with installers either, as long as the TGF installer isn't used. If I can just click the EXE and a few buttons to install, it's no more work to do anything, and it isn't exactly hard to uninstall either (just go to Start > Programs > gamename).

i see what's wrong with installers : "Next Next $HOME\tehgamename Next Next Exit"

Would you mind speaking in a language one can actually understand? Geek.

He means the buttons you press on the installer. Though i will still use one for the 101 offensive games pack that i'm making (dont get excited, theres only 7 games XD), simply because i have used a ton of obscure fonts and it would be a nightmare to find them all, so i'll let the installer do it for me. Plus people who get the game also get some nice fonts XD

I don't mind installers myself. I mean, will it kill anyone to install something instead of extract it? It's basicly the same thing. Install Creator is perfectly exceptable. Games Factory/KNP Installer =NO!

Posted by X_Sheep 14th January, 2005

I agree with CapriceVision. As long as it's NOT the default TGF/KNP installer I don't care.

Posted by Batchman 15th January, 2005

KNP/TGF or Install creator, what's the difference ? both make entries in the installshield thing, after downloading some 150 games in a year, there is 75 more games in that installshield thing, and it take 1-2 minutes to load it know it can be disable in install creator, but it seems nobody do that
