TDC Etiquette
News posted 4th May, 2006 by The Chris Street
It's been said before several times, but it doesn't hurt to help to refresh your memories now and again about the running of TDC. TDC Etiquette, if you will.

Firstly, when submitting a preview or download, please try to ensure that the description of the said article is length and well written, in coherent English. Perhaps include a plotline to start off with, and then add general information about the game. Screenshots are strongly advised too - especially if you want your game to content for GOTW or front page status. Which brings me neatly to the next point.

Please don't ask the administrators if they can put a game on the front page. It's simply not plausible to have every single game there. The way we work is that we generally pick applications with a good description and screenshots for front page status. And, all front page games are nearly always guarenteed to be in the GOTW listings as well. Sometimes we may genuinely miss a game but in the end our decision is final, regarding front page and GOTW content.

Regarding link submissions: Give it a better description than "My webpage". Tell us what it's about. Also, submit only your own sites if possible, and keep things relevant to game making, be it music, sprites, engines or games. Having a link to eBay, for instance, is kind of stupid - and yes, before you ask, if my recollection is correct we have had an eBay link before.

So, there you go. This isn't a ranting and raving newspost; more a refresher course on how we'd like TDC to work. Of course, this does tie in very well with a lot of recent submissions with lacking descriptions - but it's always best to be reminded now and again.

I have never done one of these stupid things. But there are some out there that do need reminding so thanks

Aren't you the guy who posted your screenshots as BMP files? -.-

Posted by Radix 5th May, 2006

Ignore all of that, kids.

"Contend."

Format Reminding
BMP: BitMap Project Not for web!
GIF: Global Image File Web-compatible!
PNG: Portable Network Graphics Web-Compatible
JPEG: I forget Web-Compatible

Anyway, that was helpful, but what about the forums, that's what I really need help on.

"lengthy", "condend", "guaranteed"

"Graphics Interchange Format". Global image file, wtf?

Posted by axel 5th May, 2006

I'd also like to add that JPEGs are crap for screenshots because they look messy, even with minimal compression.

Posted by Del Duio 5th May, 2006

JPEGs do tend to add a lot of noise around the edges of a picture, especially if it's a solid background- it doesn't look too hot.

And here I thought, by reading the headline, it was about making certain people behave well mannered

Posted by Radix 5th May, 2006

JPEG is fine for very detailed images (like photos), but crap for anything with well-defined lines. Generally it's not so great for klik screenshots, but it depends on the game.

Radix has got the idea.

@Axel: I've seen both of those GIF acronyms online, i'm not sure which is actually right.

Uncompressed JPEGS aren't bad, but man are they big...

Posted by The Chris Street 5th May, 2006

Wow I made loads of errors there. Guess I was tired.

Posted by Pete Nattress 5th May, 2006

As Radix says, the format of an image should depend on the image itself. But never use bitmaps.

What about posting unhelpful/non-critical comments about games? I mean, I like a bit of banter, but really comments about the game should be helpful, not just insulting.

Posted by The Chris Street 5th May, 2006

That too, but it kind of speaks for itself.
