The Weekly Click #6
News posted 25th February, 2007 by Flava
Found it rather difficult to find news again this week - but here goes.

  • Newt has updated his website with more gameplay and story information about his new upcoming game, The Ion Adventures. He tells me that there will be some new screenshots coming up soon - the game seems to be shaping really well too. Click here to visit The Ion Adventures website.

  • Ben of SilverNova has just released a level editor for the game Gauntlet Runner. It's still in the BETA stages but I suppose if you enjoyed Gauntlet Runner, then you may enjoy editing levels just as much! Click here to visit SilverNova.

  • While looking for news, I came across this new extension over at Gamesare. I don't think it has actually been released yet, but it is a Background gradient object which seems to have a few cool features. I'm not a fan of gradients myself though. Click here for more information.

  • Jimmi's project Tormishire seems to be a big hit lately, and he keeps coming up with lots of updates. He has released three new screenshots, as well as some cutesy art stuff. Go check it all out at his awesome website! Click here to see the new Tormishire screenshots.

Tormishire looks very nice, much like CaveStory (almost too much infact)

Posted by Bricnic 25th February, 2007

Can't seem to get the background gradient download URL to work.

Posted by Flava 25th February, 2007

The extension hasn't been released yet I don't think - although the webpage with info and screenshots should still work.

When I tried to download the level-editor I get a 404-message. Tried quite a few times.
So can't you check that out Ben?

I think that the Gamesare extentions are only available to those who have some sort of relationship with Gamesare. For example, if theres a game made by another individual featured at Gamesare (eg: Cactus Bruce and the Corporate Monkeys), then the creator of that game has the capability to download such extentions.

Of course, the other possibility is that yes... they haven't been uploaded yet

Posted by Dr. James MD 25th February, 2007

As far as I'm aware they're going to be available to everyone they're just not ready for download yet.

Thanks Eternal Entertainment, I've fixed that link for Ben now so you can download the file correctly

    Thanks!

    What was wrong :S

Posted by Tim 25th February, 2007

The filename didn't correspond with the database - because it was too long Fixed now though.

Certain Extensions like the background Gradient will be available to all, well others like flame will be offered as a demo only, allowing users to register them, It will be up real soon as we put the finishing touches on our site update...

    WHERE ARE DEM CHRISTMAS RESULTS?

    Posted by ZeroTau[FA] 26th February, 2007

For once I'm going to say that Tormishire does NOT look like Cave Story.

I think so many people have played CS now they think every platform adventure following is a ripoff off it.

Posted by axel 26th February, 2007

Ha, for once I agree with you. "Platformer" has become synonymous with "Cave Story clone" all of a sudden. I don't think Tormishire looks like Cave Story either. It's not the same graphic style (not even close?), and the gameplay looks different too. Bah.

Posted by Hayo 26th February, 2007

To me it looks more like the influence would have come from Yoshi's island. I don't see Cave Story in there.

    Posted by viva/volt 26th February, 2007

Yeah anything mentioning a rpg platformer or caves these days is just a rip. Looks quite original really .

Hey wow Newt's site has come on leaps and bounds since I last saw it!

Posted by Eternal Man [EE] 26th February, 2007

The bg's in Tormishire reminds me of Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night, and that's a hugh compliment.

    Posted by X_Sheep 27th February, 2007

I don't see any Cave Story in Tormishire either.

Posted by steve 27th February, 2007

You can't see the similarities? It has exactly the same status system (judging from the first screenshot) even in the same order as Cavestory "LVL", "EXP", "HP". Same japanese style look, set in... caves?

Not saying it's a bad thing to be influenced by other peoples work, and if there is some SOTN/Metroid in there too then it just shows the author has great taste in games.

Posted by Ski 27th February, 2007

I believe the reason its set in caves is because the creator has a passion for them, nothing to do with cave story.

    Posted by X_Sheep 27th February, 2007

Those kind of status bars are nothing new. They existed long before Cave Story.

Posted by Tim 27th February, 2007

Wow, guys c'mon there were loooads of games before cave story that are similar - what did cave story base itself on for example?

Ideas and styles from games are ALWAYS inspirational to other games, naturally because the depths of styles and gameplay options etc. AREN'T unlimited, so paths will cross, styles will be similar, ideas and concepts will be taken and adapted.

That's life. Cave Story doesn't DEFINE the word platformer either. Yes, it's a nice cute game in its own little way, but there's nothing amazingly spectacular in it that no-one has ever thought of once before.

So, stop going on about games looking alike etc. especially when they don't... ka-peesh? LOL

"You can't see the similarities? It has exactly the same status system (judging from the first screenshot) even in the same order as Cavestory "LVL", "EXP", "HP". Same japanese style look, set in... caves?"

First of all, it's not the same system. In Cave Story, you didn't level up yourself, but your weapons gained exp and levels and stuff, plus there was a level 3 level cap.

And Cave Story is not the first game in the world to use a level/exp/hp system. Far from it. You'd have to categorize most RPGs and MMOs since the 90s as Cave Story clones if you think so.

And the japanese look? Well, maybe a bit similar, but Cave Story had 8-bit tile-based graphics, whereas Tormishire seems to be full-color etc.

So I can't really say Tormishire looks that much like Cave Story.

Posted by Dr. James MD 27th February, 2007

That's the order I coded them in
I won't like though. I've been influenced by Metroid, Turrican, Cave Story, even Knytt but the gameplay itself plays very different to all those. I just took the graphic style from Sam and (IMO) enhanced it.

Posted by Dr. James MD 27th February, 2007

...and Castlevania. Never paid attention to the series but I picked up Aria and Dawn of Sorrow and they're like fucking godly.
