GOTW #253: Furry 2
News posted 30th September, 2007 by Broomie
Well after being given a second chance into the GOTW, Furry 2 has won with a total of 28 votes! Well done to Dustin Gunn for his great platformer. In second place was Rap attack: 2pacalypse Now with 11 votes by Paul G.

After a discussion with the fellow admins, we have had a talk about what defines a candidate for Game Of The Week. As you know we've been including anything from objects to examples which have been doing fairly well but failing to meet the requirements on actually being.. well a game (or something truly playable for that matter) So we've all come to an agreement and from now on the following will be elegible to win GOTW:

Full Freeware and Shareware Games (no demos)
Applications
Open Source Tutorials

You are more than welcome to discuss this further with us and tell everyone what you think about these new rules. We think it is fair and it still defines what we all love about GOTW. Download Of The Week just sounds... it's just not the same!

Anyway, without further ado... here are the options for this week's GOTW! Only three this week but all have very good chances of winning so it may be a difficult decider this week. :)

Zenek Zombie , Space Barnacle

Note: By request of the author, LEGALIZE IT has been removed from GOTW.

The Diary of Anne Frank Shareware was in the previous GoTW and then banned from it. I don't see any reason having it back in this poll.

Posted by LIJI 30th September, 2007

Oh, also yay for having rules in the GoTW.

Posted by Broomie 30th September, 2007

What! I thought it was removed due to a request from the author. At least that's what I thought it was... doesn't anyone tell me anything around here?

Once it is confirmed by another admin I will either add it back on or remove it completely. Rather not have votes lost.

lol, my game doesn't stand a chance!

Everyone vote for Space Barnacle!!!

You make 'AoTW'?

Application..

Posted by LIJI 30th September, 2007

Well I'm pretty sure it was Shab that removed the game.

Actually, Rikus beat me to it.

Three good looking games this week. I think I won't vote this time and see what happens.

I didn't do a combo breaker, did I?

Oops, looks like I triggered some inspirational movie names *o*

To get back on topic: what makes a shareware game not a demo? I pretty much never use shareware so I don't really know actually.
The only kinds of shareware I've ever downloaded is always a "demo", saying I need to pay I want to continue using the app.

Posted by Cazra 30th September, 2007

seriously though, why is my game even on the list? It's not supposed to be a serious game.

The GOTW really should be just between Zenek and Space Barnacle.

The no-demo rule seems to pop up every few weeks before fading away again over time.

The "Shareware Games (no demos) allowed" thing sounds a bit no-sense.

If a game is commercial, would anybody *ever* make it downloadable for free to another site?

Writing directly "NO SHAREWARE GAMES ALLOWED AT GOTW" would be far more honest.

If you want to know my opinion, demos on GOTW wouldn't surely be worse than lot of freeware crap you can find on the GOTW page, or totally off-topic things like extensions, application and tutorials (totally agree on the purpose to give them relevance, but that's *really* the most goofy way you can do it)

We held a poll recently and the results were very close but overall everybody preferred to allow shareware games into GOTW rather than not allowing them at all.

http://www.create-games.com/polls.asp?pid=3

I should have noted that we only allow shareware games that have a free trial. If it's pay to play straight away we won't even allow it on TDC, let alone entered for GOTW unless there is a free trial, obviously so you have a chance to play it and see what you think of it.

You are right about demo games as some are exceedingly excellent and can top most full freeware games. However, we don't allow them into GOTW as not only is it not the full game but if we allowed the demo to enter and win GOTW then when the game is released fully it wouldn't be fair on the other entries to enter it again as it's already won in it's demo form. And we would rather see the full game enter GOTW rather than the demo version. For example, if someone submitted a demo and it was really good and won GOTW, he could then complete it within a week and resubmit it fully and win GOTW again. It isn't really fair to the others to be quite honest.

It's a 50-50 situation however as some games may not be released later on at all so it's really up to the creator if he wants to finish it off or not. We have no idea if it will be finished but as a demo we won't allow it in.

Yet we are discussing alternatives to give demos more recognition so it's not completely losing out. But right now, if a demo is submitted then all we can really do is give it a front page mention.

I hope that has cleared a few things up.

Polls are aren't the best way to decide things though, people can click on an a choice without thinking about it, then they can't go back on it if they change their mind/see sense.

"I should have noted that we only allow shareware games that have a free trial."

There's a name for shareware games without a free trial: FULLWARE

I should have noted that we only allow shareware games that have a free trial.

Two of my games were not allowed in the GOTW polls and they fit this criteria. I say, retroactive time baby!

In any event, whatever you guys decide should be posted up here somewhere on the downloads page, kind of like a "terms for GOTW consideration" deal.

Did you eat all those nuts yet?

Posted by Johnny Look 3rd October, 2007

I like nuts.

Posted by Del Duio 3rd October, 2007

So you mean demos of games that are going to be free full games at the end? I've seen those here before too.

"I should have noted that we only allow shareware games that have a free trial."

There's a name for shareware games without a free trial: FULLWARE

*slaps head*

What I meant to say was we don't include commercial games because it requires you to purchase the games. As it is shareware it gives the user the chance to try it before they buy it. Therefore, you will know what the game is like when you vote for it.

No GOTW this week!

Yay!

Posted by Peblo 6th October, 2007

Haha, jk, it'll happen!

Posted by Radix 6th October, 2007

All shareware games are demos. That's not even internally consistent.

Posted by LIJI 6th October, 2007

Really, we have no games this week!

Posted by Peblo 6th October, 2007

Yet.
