TDC Xmas Compo
News posted 25th November, 2008 by Simon Colmer
Thats right, but without Circy here to show us the way we are gonna struggle a little this year. So if there is anything you think should appear in this years compo (excluding prize requests) please let us know!

Edit by Rikusios Sorry i just had to, i could not contain myself. But what does everyone think of the idea to have a RTS-Style game in a winter setting? RTS-Click games are hard to come by and could provide some type of challenge to everyone out there anddd should be darn fun to play!

Posted by Marko 25th November, 2008

Compo = yes please! The only thing i think should appear is lots of entries

Posted by Hernan 25th November, 2008

A good theme would be nice. Last year it was "winter", which was rather uninspiring imo. The year before it was "grid based games", which was awesome.
If I wasn't so damn busy right now, I'd come up with a suggestion, but I can't think of any atm. Sorry.

Posted by Eternal Man [EE] 25th November, 2008

Yes! Wohoo!
A good theme and merry entries please!

Posted by 3kliksphilip 25th November, 2008

How about a certain Genre? (Aside from Platformers for once).

RPGs?
RTSes?
BAT AND BALL?!?!

Posted by Dynamite 25th November, 2008

Wonderful!
Theme ideas:
- Santa related games
- A merry bad Christmas
- Jesus and the wise men
- Reindeer
- Strategy

Prize ideas
Every entry recieves $1000

Good luck!

Posted by Marko 25th November, 2008

RTS would be good, since not many people even attempt those. That'd be a proper challenge!

Posted by Klikmaster 25th November, 2008

How about someone builds an online trophy system, and everyone in the compo has to build a game that interfaces with it, then ppl can earn awards from lots of games and show em off

Oh and make it have some kind of theme too i guess..

Posted by OMC 25th November, 2008

MMF2, compo winner icon, and a TDC mug.

Posted by AndyUK 25th November, 2008

I made a big fuss about not making games about Christmas or Christmas related whatsoever last year, and we got given a 'winter' theme.
It doesn't have to be about Christmas just because it's a Christmas competition.

Posted by chrilley 25th November, 2008

Can't we just make pies for once?

Posted by OMC 25th November, 2008

Ya just can't have a Christmas compo without something Christmas related!

Posted by Otter 25th November, 2008

Can't it be winter related? :?
But yeah, a deeper theme would be nice.

Posted by Ricky 26th November, 2008

Last year's was pretty bad, the theme and the rules were too open. The grid based one 2 years ago was awesome.

Posted by Rikus 26th November, 2008

mmm my mind is kinda having all sorts of firework explosions with the RTS-Wintery-Type of Idea!

Posted by OMC 26th November, 2008

:\ I'm out if it's RTS. But don't let that stop you from picking that!

Posted by Ski 26th November, 2008

I think Ill stick to the madword compo.

Posted by Rikus 26th November, 2008

I dare you Adam to make a game for tdc winter compo.. no i double dare you You are just afraid to go up against everyone here

Posted by Ski 26th November, 2008

I already started on the madword one

Posted by Rikus 26th November, 2008

-cries-

Posted by Ski 26th November, 2008

like you care anyway

Best Christmas compo game on TDC so far is: http://www.create-games.com/download.asp?id=6546

Posted by Ski 26th November, 2008

I disagree. My fav is: http://www.create-games.com/download.asp?id=6545

"I'm out if it's RTS. But don't let that stop you from picking that!"
This.

Posted by Ricky 26th November, 2008

I'm not doing an rts either

Posted by OMC 26th November, 2008

... There's nothing wrong with that sentence grammatically.

Posted by Ricky 26th November, 2008

I agree

Posted by Toasty 26th November, 2008

I'd give an RTS a go. I've already attempted an RTS engine before, however gave up after struggling with the pathing. RTS might be too much of an ask with less than a month to go. Maybe a genre a little less challenging, which will also encourage more people to participate. How about just plain strategy? Not necessarily 'Real Time'.

Posted by Rikus 26th November, 2008

well if its to hard for people then i guess not then eh, oh well

Posted by alastair john jack 26th November, 2008

Its a lot easy to pull off in construct, but that probably wouldn't be allowed to be used anyway. Racism.

Posted by SoftWarewolf 26th November, 2008

i think the xmas compo's always start\end to late, the results never arrive before long into january and then i don't feel like playing xmas games anymore..

how about a superquick compo.. set the deadline to dec12 or something so we actually get some games before christmas

Posted by erghhhhx 26th November, 2008

I feels kinda' over my skill, but I will atleast try.

Posted by Rob Rule 26th November, 2008

An RTS themed compo is an awfully uninclusive choice for what's usually an open, all skill level compo. Possibly not the best idea.

Posted by Dr. James MD 26th November, 2008

Xmas compo, excellent :3

Posted by 3kliksphilip 26th November, 2008

Okay, an RPG then!

I think it's best to make it something more challenging. I mean, how will people ever get better with the game maker if all they do is make simple games? They need a challenge, and as this is a competition, this is the best place for such a challenge. Botched entries are always more fun.

Posted by RedEnchilada 26th November, 2008

I like the idea of strategy, myself.

Posted by Zezard 26th November, 2008

RTS is a good idea.
The only problem is probably that people expect certain complicated tings like a good path-finding algorithm and lots of AI and stuff. This is however not necessary for the RTS genre.

It must be strategic, and it must be real time, that's all.

Posted by 3kliksphilip 26th November, 2008

Yeah, I'd like to see Triumph! War get some proper competition.

Posted by Mr_Tom 26th November, 2008

yeah i think 'strategy' could do it.. Doesnt have to be an RTS with pathfinding etc. Could do a stealthy game for it or even a kind of puzzle game... basically anything where the objective is not 'blast as many coconuts as possible' .. ?

Posted by markno2 26th November, 2008

RTS would be an excellent theme.

Posted by erghhhhx 26th November, 2008

So... RTS is the theme?

Posted by Eternal Man [EE] 26th November, 2008

No, the theme isn't decided yet, though most people would like to see a strategy theme.

Posted by Marko 26th November, 2008

Strategy/RTS theme is a great idea!

Posted by 3kliksphilip 26th November, 2008

Yeah I agree!

Posted by Mr_Tom 26th November, 2008

me too!

Posted by Otter 26th November, 2008

I still think people should do rts, even if they dislike the idea. That's means they'll come up with something more creative than usual. Plus rts isn't that hard, especially if you do a side by side rts where everything just walks forward after you buy a character and such. Plus with overhead you can set everything to bouncing ball movement.

Posted by 3kliksphilip 27th November, 2008

Damn, my secret tactic to winning has been uncovered.

Posted by Mr_Tom 27th November, 2008

what 'bouncing ball wars II: revenge of the cube' ?

Posted by OMC 28th November, 2008

I wouldn't necessarily say that, Wiiman. If someone doesn't want to do a particular type of game, they might come up with something more creative, but in most cases they'll probably just slap something together.

Better watch out, better not cry.
'cause Batel's finally gonna make FHS 2 this year! W00! and I'm still working on CC 2.

Posted by Windybeard Games 4th December, 2008

RTS is a bit intense imo, i wouldnt have the time or energy to imerse myself into somthing that technical. i think this would completely rule out entries from less experienced clickers.

Posted by 3kliksphilip 4th December, 2008

I think my third game ever was a Triumph War clone.

Why not have a more complicated competition? There are plenty of skilful klikers here!

Posted by Mr_Tom 4th December, 2008

yeah to make a triumph war clone you just have 1 guy on eight direction movement who shoots things and everyone else on bouncy ball movement that stop occasionally to shoot in a random direction (but it wont matter cos there will be so many people that they are bound to hit something and look as if they're at least remotely intelligent)

Posted by Bricnic 5th December, 2008

I want a formal compo page up! When is this expected to happen?

Posted by AS Filipowski 5th December, 2008

RTS games are fairly easy actually.

Posted by columbo borgi :C 7th December, 2008
