La Mulana coming to WiiWare
News posted 29th July, 2009 by Rob Rule

Nicalis, the ever-expanding indie dev company with strong Klik roots, is bringing freeware classic La Mulana to Nintendo's WiiWare service, complete with updated assets and new features distributed through a DLC (downloadable content) scheme.

Its release has been pencilled in as Winter of this year.

Looks kind of boring, he just walks around in the trailer. The most action I saw was him throwing something at a bat.

I agree. The graphics looks nice though.

Console DLC? I'll skip, same goes for the Cave Story port. It does look good though but DLC; no buy.
It's a nice way of making money ontop of the original purchase but it also gives a license to nickel and dime consumers into getting the full experience.

That trailer didn't do much to make the game look exciting to play, did it? Shame as the graphics look very nice indeed...

Have any of you played the original?

It looks like a Castlevania clone. With about 10% of the enemies. But then again I am totally out of touch with popular indigames, not getting games like Cave story and Knytt at all.

knytt i can understand, its pretty boring. but cave story is just a great platformer, regardless of its indieness.

im working on "Hell" in cavestory. Cant beat Ballos.

Rob Rule: I have not, how good was it?

La Mulana is one of the best indie platform games I've played. It can be unforgiving but it's so rewarding because of that. I'll be checking out the WiiWare port for sure. Hopefully they won't mess with the formula too much.

I beat ballos in under 5 minutes Cecil.

Posted by Codemonkey 30th July, 2009

No it took me 12 minutes first time.

This news is old, but I suppose people that didn't know now do.

Personally, I'm looking forward, as am I the Cave Story port. The original La-Mulana was a good game, may I note, as many people here don't seem to think it is. It's actually one of the most well-known and most loved Indie games alongside Cave Story, so it's a surprise to hear that only a few even know of it.

Having played Cave Story and La Mulana, comparing them is like comparing Phillip Seymor Hoffman to Rob Schneider. Cave Story is so much better in every respect, I don't even understand how they can be held in the same light...

I think the news was more meant to show that someone with klik roots has somewhat "made it big" and is doing something professionally with their work rather than just releasing freeware to a specific community. Not that there's anything wrong with that at all. But the few that make it outside here should be noted IMO.

Cave Story and La-Mulana are both great in their own ways. I cherish both of them as some of my favorite games, and it's interesting to see them being introduced to a wider audience. I'm wondering if they'll tone down the difficulties of the puzzles in La-Mulana, because its insane difficulty is what made the game so unique.

I'm also surprised so little of you have heard of La-Mulana!

I know of La Mulana, but I didn't get very far. I couldn't stand the controls.

why download a FREEWARE game for FREE if i can also BUY it for...how much is this gonna cost?

if its FREE i will apologize of course but COME ON its on the WII where I have to pay a fortune for 20kb big NES roms- seriously its such a rip off.

Even if one is not pleased with the notion of paying for an indie game, one should consider supporting the developers. There are a couple GREAT reasons for this, off the top of my head:

--it encourages the recipient to keep doing what they love, as an extra buck or two always helps
--WiiWare will look more often to the 'retro' (or whatever they want to call this trend) scene for more candidates to pick up and publish

In the past, I've paid for indie games/music/films simply because I've wanted to see those creators keep doing their thing. Their final product may not have been the best when compared to a big budget game/album/film, and yeah you have to lay out some of your hard-earned cash, but in most cases I know the love is there and I know the creativity is there.

Case in point, in terms of gaming I picked up both Turning The Tide and the ClickDisk as soon as I heard they went on sale. Next paycheck, I'm going to order Faerie Solitaire. Though these may be small purchases in the grand scheme of things, they serve not just as encouragement for developers to keep up their efforts, but also actual compensation for their hard work.

As an artist myself (and fledgling game-maker to boot), I know how important it is that ongoing-but-unestablished efforts gain some financial encouragement for their efforts, in addition to pats on the back. So many artists and creators have had their dreams crushed by the financial reality of it all that it's important (for those who have the means to do so) to support these new efforts.

For the record, I don't own a Wii, and I don't like the controls of La-Mulana either.
