New Competition: Once Upon An Engine
News posted 20th June, 2011 by Strife

Summer vacation is just around the corner, and if the weather hasn't heaten things up around here, then a hot new competition should do the trick! Our forum dwellers have been discussing ideas for an engine-based contest that is sure to appeal to casual developers and veteran MMFusionists alike.

Here's the story thus far: One of our users would submit a premade game engine for Multimedia Fusion, and all entrants into the contest would have to make their own game from this engine. Contestants would not be able to edit the engine in any way, so the challenge lies in creating a uniquely awesome game without touching the base coding. The cool part about this idea is that with the engine already coded and finished, contestants wouldn't have to spend time building their own engine from scratch, and could focus their effort on the more stylish aspects of game development - the graphics, level design, sound, music, and gameplay gimmicks. The whole concept sounds like a wonderful excuse to make something quick and fun over the summer, which of course means that we'd get to play a bunch of new games! ^_^

The competition is still in its planning phase, of course, and we are trying to decide on an engine to use. Should we use something open-ended, like a simple shoot-em-up or platform engine, or should we challenge our contestants with something ultra-specific like a turn-based strategy or falling block engine? If you have an engine that you'd like us to take into consideration, post it on the forum thread and let us know your ideas!

I think the engine should be made by Scirra (creators of construct)

They are very good at making engines without completing their products.

Epic win +1 ask Tigerworks for doing engine in MMF2 Dev with all addons and extensions and he will come back from the dark side.

And to be serious, where's point of doing engine compo without touching engine?

I like the sound of this!
I might throw something together for this.

Sound good to me, a bit different. I'm IN!

making engines is like, the only part of game design i enjoy. this contest is not for me

Fanotherpg - The point is not to create an engine, but for the entrants to work with the limitations of the engine and build upon it to make something original.

Sounds good

Sounds cool actually.

is it gonna be a platformer engine? cuz thatd be pretty sweet. got some cool ideas in store already if it is

Posted by Codemonster 21st June, 2011

siven if Scirra makes the engine it will be announced as a platformer engine, but you will only be able to walk left or right, because the gravity will have too many bugs to release.

a second version of the engine with platforming will become available, and will include jumping, but you will only be able to use it on linux and it will cost money

The idea is quite nice, but I'm better coder than graphics designer, so the battle isn't for me too. But if I find some time...

we should have a good contest, where we are given a set of graphics. and have to code a game for them

Or if some people only want to do graphics (using someone else's engine), and others only want to do coding (using someone else's graphics), we could make it a team competition - Tourey II®!

Tourey was awesome. I'd be up for another of those.

Summer vacation is just around the corner? It's been a month since school ended for me

I'm something of a specialist when it comes to "engines with no graphics" But I am quite busy working on those graphics and content for my own project right now, probably commercially, so I don't know if I could lend terrible amounts of time.

But if someone shoots an idea across, I'm always game.

It sounds like Ricky just volunteered to make the engine
