No longer freeware
Posted 28th Dec 08, by Steve Harris
Well the title says it all really... i've gone from this project being shareware to freeware to shareware to... you get the idea. What made me change it back again is that I was looking back through the project files and suddenly realised how much time and effort myself and Hayo have put in to this. We actually started it in 2005 and (as i'm sure you know) it's now nearly 2009 and inbetween there and here we've certainly racked up the hours!

There will be a demo released with about 3-4 levels plus a hidden bonus level (haven't decided exactly how many levels yet) so you'll all still be able to have a play

I've spent some of the christmas break tidying up the website and getting it ready for release - www.turningthetide.info (only page that isn't working is the media page whilst I finish up the game and then get the video and screenies done).

Anyway... if anyone does want to buy the game it'll be $20 on release or if you order now it'll be $10. Obviously if we don't release the game you'll get your money back! You'll also get a pre-release version of the game to play with.

I'll stop babbling now. Happy Xmas and New Year!

Steve such high and rather normal price won't help you to sell the game. I know that it is good, but it just won't work with such price.

I've given the price a lot of thought and read a lot of articles by indie developers discussing pricing etc and $20 seems to be a reasonable place to pitch it at. I was considering $15 but i'll probably stick with $20 and see how it goes. I'll also be running a promotion whereby if you mention the game with a link back to the site i'll give you a 50% discount. So by making a simple post you can get the game for $10 instead of $20.

It's all about projected sales, to give you a example of why 20 dollars is a common price take a look at a make believe example...

10 copies at 20.00 = 200.00
18 copies at 10.00 = 180.00

In other words studies show that lower prices though yielding more sales does not always yield more profit. Hence why alot of software sells at the 20.00 price point online, Of course I hope steve sells more like 2000 copies or 20,000 copies at 20.00 dollars then my example figures, but it goes to show the reason for the 20 price in most games online

Yes but also most of players and users says that price of 20 dolars is too high and this is why they use illegal versions. Best example World of Goo with such marketing (none DRM or other stuff) 90% of used copies are illegal... And price was about 20 dolars.

Yes but how many of those 90% would have bought the game anyway? A very small percantage I think.

When people pirate games they are unlikely to have paid for it at all in the first place regardless of the price.

I think you need to take into account that when people will decide whether or not to pay for a game, you need to offer them something more than the average game or playing experience. 20 dollars sounds fairly reasonable, compared to computer games being some what around $80-$100AUD (where I live at least), but you need to make it worth every cent.

For me 20 dolars is about 40-60 zloty and for such cash I can buy commercial titles in boxes.

I just want to say that World of Goo was sold at cost of 20$ and it is going on that price because it's very high quality game and TTT is very good oldschool quality game.

For example on my side I'm giving you link to some interesting article http://www.positech.co.uk/talkingtopirates.html check it.

BTW I hope like Kisguri that you will sell your game as high as possible and probably if I have cash I would buy it.

It is interesting how such a relatively simple thing can divide people. I've had the same conversation over on TIGS and people were much more in favour of $20 compared to $10 or $15... but at the end of the day they aren't the end consumers.

Kisguri has a very good point. He's point is you need to strike a balance on the price point to maximise your profit. I'd rather sell 100 copies at $15 than 70 at $20.

The reason that I settled at $20 was that I can always come down on the price but it's difficult to go up. I'll probably keep tweaking the price until I get the right balance. But my offer of $10 for a link on another website will still stand.

I must agree with you Steve it is hard to bring up a price from lower one but I still hope that you will get the right balance and as much money as possible because you deserve it.
