So an actual progress update explaining some of the stuffs in the trailer, no videos, I promise!
First of all the update I wanted to show most was the updated first boss
I love this thing. It's changed so much since the first incarnation.
In Tormi fashion there are 2 ways of killing it which slightly alter some short-term events. And
something not in the trailer is a new beam effect.
Which is very nice in motion. Leaves a kind of motion blur behind.
Bombs have also been changed drastically. Previously they would detonate after a second or 2, now they explode upon impact which makes for some physicsy stuff where you can now rebound bombs quickly... Good for the 4th and 5th bosses where you need to hit a few targets as quickly as possible.
And speaking of bosses, a new un!
Lava bit has been massively updated to look and feel hotter.
And a whole new area.
On a completely different note the new(ish) Castlevania game is nothing short of amazing.
It's had a shimmer effect since the area was started but to make it run smoother for some computers its been moved to high quality graphics mode. Infact all the trailer and screenshots were done in low quality mode, bugger
I had to rub my eyes and pinch my arm, but I was not dreaming.
Those effects look amazing James, you are a real magician! Also it is a great achivement that the hi-end smooth alpha channeled particle effects still blends perfectly with pixel art. Often when people add effects like that it just looks odd and stand out too much from the rest of the graphics.
Edit: The first bit of post was in response to a comment by Adam saying the boss style was ripped from another game, one released after New Sam. Just so it makes sense
Wait, big sprites+rotations=NL2? Bwhahaha. Even The New Satan Sam had big rotating bosses you do crack me up!
Cheers Blueberry A few people told me to not mix alpha effects and Photoshop enhanced stuff into the game but IMO it works. Comment edited by Dr. James on 3/1/2009
I wish I was as good as Ryan Wheeler with gfx
he's the chap who always teaches me new pixel art techniques and stuff. Guys brilliant. Really intense artist, I think (never met him of course ).
You must be careful with that... They don't keep backups of save files (unlike Pokemon and virtually every other big DS game) so if it saves and the power cuts out - BYE BYE SAVE FILE. Which happened to me last night. Almost 4 hours in
But it's so brilliant I don't mind going through again. Probably one of the best games I've played that.
