Throughout the course of this project, I have been trying feverishly to find a happy medium between IWBTG similarities and differences, so that I can have a game that functions like IWBTG but different enough to be set apart from it.
I was doing some brainstorming today, and I had a thought I want to share with you. First, a little background.
When I played IWBTG, I absolutely loved it. I really got into it, and I thought "I like how something so simple can be so challenging and addicting". I knew some people didn't have the patience for it, but I loved it.
After a while, I decided "I would like to try to make a game like this". I first toyed with Game Maker, and used the same sprites, sounds, and other parts ripped directly from IWBTG. I came up with some prototypes. Later on, I got my hands on MMF2, and soon the Fangame title was born.
As development started up, slowly things began changing. A new character was made: Jonny. Gradually, other changes were being made to make it more and more different from IWBTG. Over the past several weeks I have been getting comments comparing Fangame to IWBTG, and in attempt to avoid such comparisons, I have been trying feverishly to find the happy medium between IWBTG similarities and differences.
Today I have realized that by trying to make Fangame so different from IWBTG, I have lost sight of my original ambition, which was "to try to make a game like that".
I have also realized something today that should have been my attitude the whole time. Fangame is my game. It is my creation. I can make it look the way I want, sound the way I want, and play out the way I want, and if I choose to use ideas and resources from other games (like IWBTG), I will. I should not worry if someone makes a comparison to IWBTG. If the similarities bother someone, they don't have to play it. It's as simple as that. Honestly, it should be considered a compliment to have my project compared to the game that inspired it from the beginning.
I have been trying very hard to modify, adjust, and tweak the game based on public feedback so that I can try to please as many other people as I can. Why!? Sure I'd love for people to like the game, but at what cost?
Bottom line: Fangame: The Game is about fun; fun in making it, and fun in playing it. I intend on having fun making it. If you don't have fun playing it, play something else.
