Love that style
Will there be some kind of waypoints so you can teleport around on the map? Or any other interactivity?

You could also go the Zelda route. Only have as much inventory space as you need. Then equip the items as you need them. That would be quite fitting in this case. And you could have it next to the map screen, which makes me wonder what those arrows are pointing to. Though the power up route is quite common, I'd like to see a different approach every now and then.

How about a global stash that you could access from some specific places? I wouldn't want the snorkel to be undroppable!
