Hey guys, It's been a while. While you are at it, please take a look at project's own shiny blog here http://kamukoira.blogspot.com/ . It will be much easier to read there when the images are adjusted to the text correctly. The project has been on a break the last few months but now the project is back to alive and progressing with tremendous speed. The engine is shaping up nicely and after several additions and fixes, I would call it "almost ready". The engine part is never completely ready you know but nonetheless the engine has ended up fairly well so far.
But let me introduce you some parts of the engine and features from the game you have not seen yet. You already have seen loads of the engine from the first alpha engine video and I gotta say that all parts of the game have improved remarkably both technically and visually. Example the demonic arts: wings work soooo smoothly now. They seriously will create endless amount of possibilities in the end game! Yeah, you won't get hands on these too early.
You have seen in all over a dozen of different weapons(and their special attacks) and demonic arts, but some, such as the special attacks of a pistol and a sword were not in the video even though you probably thought they should have been there. Nevertheless both of them are now ready and cooler than ever. Taking screenshot of the special attack of the pistol is hardly possible but let me dumb it down for you how it works: the character aims with absolute precision at the enemy and releases one extremely powerful shot which can harm even the strongest opponents.
The special attack of a sword on the other hand is something I personally really do like and even though the screenshot doesn't justify the beaty of the attack at all, I gotta say it's one of the most stunning effects I have created. You have by the way probably became accustomed to the screenshots with doubled resolution but this is how the game looks with its standard resolution. Pretty sharp huh? In the game you will of course have a chance to choose between 1x and 2x resolution, what ever you fits you the most.
Another thing I've been working on is the "drops". The thingies which fill up your special attack bar and the gold in your pocket. I've decided to call the special attack counter with a name "Soul shards". The character is a half-demon after all and gets stronger by eating his' enemies souls.
When enemies die they either drop a small soul shard or a big one. The small soul shard replenishes the soul shard counter for one which is pretty reasonable to me because the player can face numerous enemies at the same time and all of them drop at least one soul shard. The special attacks will eat shards from 5 to 50 depending on the power of the special attack.
The big ones don't drop that often but not overly rarely either so you will see them quite frequently. Taking one of these replenishes the counter for five shards which can be example worth of one special attack.
You probably wonder what those coin-like things on the ground are. Well, they are indeed coins. All enemies can drop from zero to four different coins. I have created three categories for the coins: a copper(worth 5 gold), a silver(worth 10 gold) and a gold(worth 25 gold). All of the four drop rates are randomized and I certainly got lucky to get three the gold coins there! But remember to pick them up fast because if you hesitate - they might be gone already!
You mostly earn gold from killing monsters and use the money to buy new weapons and upgrade the old ones to have the special attacks and maximized power but all around the levels there are treasure chests. There are different types of treasure chests and all of them have different values of gold. This wooden chest over here contains somewhere between 300 and 400 gold which is not half bad.
Most of the money get picked up when you open the chest but some of the gold fall to the ground which you need to collect by yourself. The gold and soul shards won't definitely be all there is to it: the levels will include plenty of other things to collect as powerups which will increase the character's health, mana and other abilities. Something I will really try to concentrate on is the "adventure feeling" you might experience when playing games such as Metroid and Castlevania, the levels in Demonic Hunter will also hold a lot to explore.
