The first public demo of Hooghaar Classic is out!

The Hooghaar Classic demo is made in java so you need the Java Runtime Environment or Java for normal users. To be more precise, java version 1.6 is required.

So with java installed, download the file and double click it like any normal file in windows.

Version number of the demo is: 0.38 (this isn't mentioned anywhere else) but 0.38 means that the project is 38% complete.

The demo features the same levels as the html5canvas version. It also uses the arrow keys to move, X for jumping and T for taking a screenshot.

However not all gameplay features are available yet. It's only walking, jumping and collecting coins at the moment. You can load the three levels by pressing 1, 2 or 3 on the keyboard. And of course, ESC quits the game really fast.

A little request for people downloading and playing this demo, could you post your stable fps result? It should be around 60, mine is: 61.

PS, The coin counter isn't working at the moment.

Stable framerate was around 64 or 65, so things are looking good there. I had a little hiccup on level 3 where it stuttered for a fraction of a second and dropped to 60 fps, but I couldn't replicate it for you.

Controls are stiff and quick! It's rather unforgiving should you not make a perfect jump on those tiny little platforms. I think I remember the same thing from the canvas version you released, maybe several months ago?

But I'm happy to see progress. Do your best, Jenswa!

Framerate was about 62-64, occasionally 65.

Thanks for your comments.

@ s-m-r: The player indeed moves fast and timing is crucial, not sure if I am going to change that. The little hiccup you talk about, did that occur during the loading or right after the load of the level? Because that could explain it, but since you couldn't replicate it I am not sure.

It seems that the fps is fairly fixed round 60 and a bit more, this is what I wanted to know.

@ Jenswa: Hmm...From what I recall, it was after I had already started playing, long after the level had loaded. Again, I couldn't replicate it for you so there are very few additional clues I could pass along.

Maybe the only thing I can think of is that I was jumping and I think I had passed above the top edge of the screen for a moment.

Honestly, if no one else has reported such an issue, then I would rack it up to perhaps something on my end. Who knows what sort of stuff was running in the background/updating/maintenance/etc. ?

Thanks s-m-r, no idea what that hiccup created, one last shot: perhaps the java garbage collector came to action. Or indeed something else on your account.

I am glad the fps is stable on not too high, I am trying to find the minimum specs. A 700 mhz device seems to be too slow and even 1,5 ghz is a little slow. So yes, java is slow, java 2D that is.
