Subway Stations and HUD update
Posted 19th Jul 09, by Blue66
Hi fellas!
Right after making some new levels, I let my friend play it and while watching I felt like the game is lacking depth. The overworld map which was linking all maps together didn't fit the game anymore. It made the game feel like seperate levels you have to go to and I didn't want that for the game. So I got rid of the map.

I started linking places directly (e.g. run through the forest and get to the city) but I soon realized that this wasn't enough. The game started to feel linear and that's exactly what I don't want! I want the player to make a lot of choices on his own and one major part will be WHERE DO I WANT TO GO NEXT?

So I reworked some more stages and finally came up with a subway system that links some major areas of the game together (kinda like a teleporter). If you progress through the game, you will find station coordinates which will let you travel to new places. Those places will not feel like new levels you've found. It will be more like expanding the accessable world to find items/power-ups/quests etc.
The player has to ask himself 'do I want to go to that whole new place, or do I want to discover some more things here first?'

Oh, and I finally improved the HUD

Sweet! I bet this game feels huge now! Maps really break stuff down, but this'll make it seems gigantic! I love Metroid like exploring and the whole "Should I go on, or do I have stuff to do here?" feeling, and I love the way this'll add to it. The big thing to me will be that you don't always start the level at the same point. That's what really added to the "level" feel. It would be sweet if you had some subways that were really hard to find going to secret levels.
