Menu Makeover
Posted 11th Dec 09, by Strife
Short and sweet update here. After thinking about it for a while, i've decided that the HUD (and interface in general) needs a makeover. I haven't touched it since I first built the engine almost two years ago. (Daaayum, it's been that long already? o_o)

Thanks to some of Jess's advice on the boards, i'm on my way to making a more attractive interface. The screenshot i've included shows the changes so far.

I removed the top bars from the HUD in order to get some extra space, swapped a few things around, and changed the color and texture of the buttons. I might rearrange a few more things, but i'm liking the results. Definitely has more personality than the former HUD.

I would chuckle in joyful glee, but that might seem a bit strange. Looks fantastic!

You ought to try making the shadows semi-transparent solid objects rather than checkerboard!

Thanks!

I would do that with the shadows, but as it stands, I have no semi-transparency effects in the game whatsoever, which increases speed in older computers. Also, shadows are built into each monster's animations, so i'd need to wait until I somehow convert the game over to MMF2, at which point the alpha channels would make it easier and HWA would get rid of the slowdown issue altogether.

I figured that was the reason. Do you have MMF2?

YESH! This is a whole lot better than before!

Can't wait to play play play!

I ordered MMF2 a couple weeks ago, but I just gotta wait for my dad to mail the package to my Swedish address (I needed to put my US address in the order form in order for the upgrade discount to work). Soon enough, I shall be basking in the glory that is MMF2.

Thanks, Urb!

I really like the changes you made to the HUD!

Looks pretty nice - good improvement.
However there is a lot of unused space between the buttons and the HP bar (around where it says 'level 6')

Yeah, that's the only problem I see at the moment. I'm thinking that if I can't find something to put there, I could always draw a nice symbol or something to spice it up a little more.

SS:

Looks awesome but I have a couple suggestions if you don't mind hearing them. That inventory pop up box needs some sort of border around it. It just doesn't seem to fit with all the other good-looking HUD stuff you have going on IMO. Just use those same gold-colored thin lines that you're using to border the rest of your boxes and that'd look really good.

The other thing is you might want to get aother font for your inventory item texts themselves. It just looks weird (again) to have that font right next to the much better-looking fonts you have going in the rest of the HUD.

Minor MINOR quibbles I assure you, you're going a great job on this regardless!

Dude, I have your solution! Why not put an EXP meter in that spot? To show progress to the next level? When the bar's full you'd level up. That would be something I'd find useful while playing and others might too.

With regards to the inventory box - I'm actually using the IconView object for it, which has limited capabilities as far as display goes. As for the font, i'd rather keep it small so that the item names don't cause too much horizontal scrolling in it.

As for the EXP meter, I already have one. Look closely between the health and mana bars. ^_~ It looks white in the screenshot, but i've fixed it so that it stays solid yellow.
