Music Overhaul
Posted 25th Jan 10, by Strife
As some of you might have guessed, I am also composing the soundtrack for FableQuest. So far, the instruments I've been using are from a Yamaha XG SoftSynth driver, which is quite good compared to General MIDI.

However, since the beginning, I've felt that the songs I composed had a "muffled" and 16-bit feel to them, which is not something I'm aiming for with the soundtrack. I want it to be top-notch, and the only way I can do that is by using sound fonts for the instruments. I've been playing around with it, and I think I've gotten pretty comfortable with sound fonts and the programs needed to use them.

So, I'm going to remix every single song I've made for the game so far. To give you an idea of how much better this will make the music feel, here's an example of two songs I've revamped so far.

Terris Town:

Dark Woods:

The top song is the old one composed in XG, and the bottom one is the improved version with sound fonts. Sounds more professional, eh? :3

It already sounded professional. Now it sounds even better!

I blame my somewhat perfectionist tendencies. If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's that a game developer is his/her own toughest critic.

Thank you, though!

Very good. If this music was an animal, and that animal could scream a word it would scream "RPG!"
