Graphics Antics

'Bout time for a little update, eh?

As far as the gameplay goes, I haven't done anything significant other than addressing bug reports and such. I've also changed the auto-recovery system so that the game always asks you if you want to continue your previous game, even if you closed the program down normally. It only works once, though, and you still have to find a save point in order to legitimately save your progress, so I don't see any major issues with keeping it in.

Other than that, I've been preparing work for future areas of the game by drawing some graphics ahead of time, before I actually start work on the coding and such.

Our first item of the day: Southwater Castle, the main base of operations for the Imperium. The first screenshot I've attached shows the castle in Spore: Galactic Adventures, and the second screenshot shows the redrawn version that will appear during a cutscene in the game. I'm not entirely sure if I got the lighting or colors right, but it's nevertheless a good start.

Second item of the day: Pirates. After the Solar Temple plotline, Ikkin runs into a pirate captain who knows exactly who she is and where she came from. The catch, however, is that you'll have to help her find the rest of her crew, who all wound up stranded in Megatia after a shipwreck. Once that's done, not only will the pirates help Ikkin enter the next dungeon, but she will find something in there that will finally reveal her past and cure her amnesia. She'll also receive something else that's rather awesome, but I'll save that surprise for later. ^_~

EDIT: Updated the screenshot of the castle. :3

Wow, these look amazing! The only thing I can say about the pictures is that in the 2nd one, the colors on the flags seem to stick out over anything else in the picture, I would maybe try some darker colors, or maybe even lower the contrast between the colors.

Yeah, I think you're right about the flags. They don't blend in as well.

Thanks guise. :3

Since you mentioned it, I personally believe the lighting on the castle is wrong. The way the clouds are catching light in the background suggests that the sun should be behind the structure, but the way it has been defined on the castle itself is as if a light source exists in front of the castle instead, and a bit to the right.

I agree with the flag comment, too - I believe you could remedy the problem by altering the contrast, or at least dulling the bright red a little. Also, if you decide to redo the lighting on the castle so that it matches the lighting on the background, you may need to make the grey symbol inside the flags a bit darker because it's uncharacteristically bright compared to the rest of the image, which further confuses the issue of your lightsource.

Don't worry, not all my comments about your game are purely critical, I just thought I would contribute my two cents while we were on the topic. I have been following your progress ever since you first posted this project, and I really enjoy reading the frequent updates. The scope of this project is pretty large - much larger than any game I've seriously considered making - so it is reassuring to see that you have the patience and the passion to keep this baby going. While I have found two things to critique in this recent update I have so far been impressed with your work, especially since you updated the water. Excellent work so far, Strife!

[EDIT]
I just realized you were the author of one of my all-time favourite Klik games, Star Angel! I know it's only a simple little game and compared to this you probably feel that you've come a long way and that your games have more to offer now, but I STILL have Star Angel on my computer today, and although the last time I played it was like a year ago, it's one of the ones I always go back to when I run out of new options. I think I even reviewed it back in the day. Small world!

Woohoo, epic post!

Yeah, I can see what you mean about the sun being in the wrong spot. I think the easiest remedy would be to find a different sky background where the sun is on the opposite side. I've also dumbed down the contrast of the flags, given them a waving animation, altered the colors of the windows so that it looks like there's lights inside the castle, and added a second layer of shrubbery in the foreground for more depth. I shall post another screenie once I find a different sky.

As for the critical comments, don't worry about it - I've seen some of your comments on other games, so I know you're like that. Besides, I can take whatever help I can get, so thank you.

OMG, somebody remembers Star Angel? I'm rather embarrassed by the music in it, since I've become such a better composer than I used to be, but it's pretty neat to know that my first TDC game still has plenty of replay value. I guess I made a good call with those randomly generated maps, eh? Thank you, in any case.
