What's in a story?
Posted 21st Sep 09, by vertigoelectric
Fangame has a hero. His name is "Jonny". He's a semi-cool teenager with nothing particularly special about him (except he has the semi-amazing ability to perform a double-jump in mid air).

What Fangame does not have is a story. What exactly is Jonny's quest (not to be confused with "Jonny Quest")? What is he searching for? What is the goal?

What I'm thinking is that Jonny should be about his normal business, when he loses something dear to him (perhaps a pet of some kind, which escapes its bounds and takes off into the yard). Whatever this beloved item or pet is, he chases it across the yard and either into a cave or hole in the ground, after which begins his dangerous quest.

I think back on a favorite NES game of mine: Blaster Master. In case you have not played the game, it's about a boy with a beloved pet frog. One day the frog's jar tips over and the frog hops away. Jason chases. The frog then leaps into a big hole in the ground (which is totally random, but it does the job). Jason then jumps in after (which shows not only an unrivaled love for his dear frog but also a lack of concern for almost certain death). It's the perfect blend of simplicity, randomness, and reason (as well as a touch of the lack thereof).

So I ask again, what is Jonny's quest? Why did he leave the comforts of his home to embark on a perilous journey, just to die a thousand deaths before ever returning?

I think Johnny either sleep walks or is on drugs!!!

No on a more believable idea....Why noy have Johnny be a treasure hunter in the style of Indiana Jones searching for some bizarre relic.

Well, the original idea was that he was to be on a quest for the truth about cake (a sort of a play on Portal's "the cake is a lie" bit). That would be similar to what you are talking about, though the cake is not exactly a relic, but the idea is a bit bizarre.

He's definitely a sleepwalker who is on a quest for the truth about cake! Perfect story!

...but we've already drawn the sprites with his eyes open. Dang.

some sleepwalkers have their eyes open!!!

well he's not sleepwalking, so...

It is quite simple really. His car got reposessed. He cannot go on a date with his girl who is rather upset. She forces him to go down a secret tunnel in her families well that has various riches in it. She locks the well lid on him. She calls down that, if he makes it out alive, she'll have cake. It is his birthday tomorrow after all.

That's simple? Nah. I don't want romance involved... *gasp*

Posted by Xhunterko 23rd September, 2009

Throw out the chick then. And make it just so he's treasure hunting for to pay off his car.

lol...

well, we'll see. Something like paying for a car seems a little bit mundane... and not quite mysterious enough. It's really hard to explain, but the right idea will give me that "Yeah! That's it!" kinda feeling when I hear it or randomly come up with it on my own.

By the way, who Fav'd the project today? Thanks and kudos to whoever you are! Image

The kids at Jonny's school pick on him because he is always making up tall tales about his life and over-exaggerating everything to get attention. Then one day on the way to school, he falls into a hole and lands in a cave. He finds that in order to escape he must face insanely difficult obstacles and life threatening situations. If he makes it out, he'll have a REAL thrilling adventure to tell everyone about.

Something like that... I guess... I dunno. You could also make it so the whole thing ends up being a daydream in Jonny's head, so it's some sort of sick twisted joke on Jonny and his deranged mind. lol.

A daydream would be a neat idea. (Shouldn't be visible in the intro.)

We don't want Jonny to be a normal school kid though. Something involving as few people as possible.

Heheh, well you could do something like have him walking down the street and he's about to get hit by a car (or something is about to kill him) and instead a huge hole opens up in the ground and swallows him up. So then he's going through all of these gruesome deaths over and over until he reaches the "end", only to discover that he really got hit by the truck and he died and he's just in hell. Then the game places you back at the beginning to play through it again. Hahaha.

Hmmmmm... I think maybe we're going a little bit overboard here... I love your enthusiasm but I'm not too thrilled about the "being in hell" part...

Let's try something else
