Devlog #8
Posted 18th Sep 10, by Johnny Look
In the last devlog I said I was starting to work on the substitutions and tactics.
The problem I encountered was that most of the code was a mess, so I had to clean it up completely before I could start working on the more complex parts of the game.

This proved to be both a huge relief and an extra motivator as everything was a lot easier to work with now.

Previously, all the stats in the game were hard coded, which meant it was impossible to make a complex database.

Now each player and each team has specific stats, and the game will come with a editor so that people will be able to edit the players and quite possibly teams as well.

This new stat system was also necessary for what I also recently finished: the tactics system.

Now you can make substitutions and choose the tactics as well as adjust if you want the team to be more aggressive or more defensive.

This is nothing new, but my objective with this system was to kept it as simple but at the same time effective as I could.

Playing against a defensive team or against a team like Barcelona feels very different and forces the player to take a different approach for each opponent. While the game doesn't force you to suit your tactics and playing style to the team you're facing, sometimes one tactical change can balance the game at your favour, or on the contrary, a disastrous decision can make you lose the match.

The AI also takes advantage of that and knows how to react when they are losing or winning and have the strength of your team and their own in consideration. For example, they know when a draw can be a good result, or what should be their initial approach to the match.

There's a lot more to this, but I'll expand on it later otherwise I'd be here all day.

This whole thing still needs some fine tuning, and so does the rest of the game, but I'm confident we're heading in the right direction.

Great looking game. How many players can play at a time? Is it an online game? What's the control scheme? Finally, will I able to it play with my joypad.

Carnivorous id: Thanks !
I'm not sure what you mean by how many players there are at the same time, it's 11 against 11, or if you are talking about multiplayer, it will be 2 players only (each player control their side). The game will be mostly singleplayer, though I'm planning multiplayer modes (hotseat and online). About the control scheme do you mean if it's like pes or kick off for example ? If so, it doesn't play much differently from sensible soccer, which I think is somewhere between fifa/pes and Kick off.
And yes, I plan to add joypad support
