Jan update
Posted 16th Jan 09, by Dr. James MD
So an actual progress update explaining some of the stuffs in the trailer, no videos, I promise!

First of all the update I wanted to show most was the updated first boss
Image
I love this thing. It's changed so much since the first incarnation.
Image
In Tormi fashion there are 2 ways of killing it which slightly alter some short-term events. And

something not in the trailer is a new beam effect.
Image
Which is very nice in motion. Leaves a kind of motion blur behind.

Image
Bombs have also been changed drastically. Previously they would detonate after a second or 2, now they explode upon impact which makes for some physicsy stuff where you can now rebound bombs quickly... Good for the 4th and 5th bosses where you need to hit a few targets as quickly as possible.

And speaking of bosses, a new un!

Lava bit has been massively updated to look and feel hotter.

And a whole new area.

On a completely different note the new(ish) Castlevania game is nothing short of amazing.

James, you've done it again! You went of and decided to make this game even better. Lol

Niceness Docta. I want to play now. :3

How the hell are you making those effects?!?!? Those are absolutely brilliant. I want this on DS, now.

This looks amazing!! with regards to the Lava level are you putting shimmer effects in to further emphasise the heat???

Posted by Dr. James MD 16th January, 2009

It's had a shimmer effect since the area was started but to make it run smoother for some computers its been moved to high quality graphics mode. Infact all the trailer and screenshots were done in low quality mode, bugger

that boss 1 comparison makes me laugh

Horrible isn't it can't believe I ever thought that first thing was acceptable as a boss. Such a weedy little thing. And... Is it wearing glasses?

I had to rub my eyes and pinch my arm, but I was not dreaming.

Those effects look amazing James, you are a real magician! Also it is a great achivement that the hi-end smooth alpha channeled particle effects still blends perfectly with pixel art. Often when people add effects like that it just looks odd and stand out too much from the rest of the graphics.

Edit: The first bit of post was in response to a comment by Adam saying the boss style was ripped from another game, one released after New Sam. Just so it makes sense

Wait, big sprites+rotations=NL2? Bwhahaha. Even The New Satan Sam had big rotating bosses you do crack me up!

Cheers Blueberry A few people told me to not mix alpha effects and Photoshop enhanced stuff into the game but IMO it works.

I wish i was as good you with GFX.;__;

I wish I was as good as Ryan Wheeler with gfx
he's the chap who always teaches me new pixel art techniques and stuff. Guys brilliant. Really intense artist, I think (never met him of course ).

Interesting new screenshots, really enjoying it.
I'm looking forward to getting OoE in Febuary when it comes out for us!

You must be careful with that... They don't keep backups of save files (unlike Pokemon and virtually every other big DS game) so if it saves and the power cuts out - BYE BYE SAVE FILE. Which happened to me last night. Almost 4 hours in
But it's so brilliant I don't mind going through again. Probably one of the best games I've played that.

STOP PLAYING LEFT 4 DEAD AND FINISHT EH BLOODY GAME

Posted by alastair john jack 19th January, 2009

It does usually say not to turn off the power when you save

Posted by Dr. James MD 19th January, 2009

Yea but some keep backups of your last save. Don't mind playing this a million times over though.
