More enginey stuff
Posted 9th Sep 08, by Dr. James MD
So I'm trying to get the game running better on slower machines. Went through a few other click games and noted how much RAM and CPU they're taking up.

Knytt Stories uses such little CPU I could barely get it onto 2%! But it is ram happy at 24mb (at least on my computer).

So yea I'm now trying to squeeze out more speed. Managed to cut it down to 22mb and 20% CPU (from 35mb and 30%) by shutting off unused groups. It's just isolating events that need to run even though the group is off. But this is inching on a 2000-event engine, it's a bit beefy and does a lot like.
Never drops a frame even with everything on high on my 2ghz C2D but loads of people dont have that kind of setup.

By deactivating everything it still takes up 12% CPU! WTF!
Also lowered reduced effects to the absolute bare minimum on low quality mode. It really helps but at a big visual cost, like.

Sorry for rambling like. It's kind of fun trying to squeeze as much from MMF2.

Thats one of the things I feel makes you feel good about your game. I'm going to do the same when i'm closer to finishing it although i made the n00b mistake of having Directx mode on.

Btw since Knytt doesn't scroll it's bound to use little CPU time.

That's true. In some areas where enemies spit particles at you it jumps to 4% CPU usage too.

Ah yea HWA... I get some great speed back from that but I can't rely on when its done and when my game is finished. If only we had a solid answer from Clickteam!

You are awesomeness James! <3

Why not give a graphics option for the game so both could run it fast?

I'm pretty sure that events alone won't speed it up much. It'll mainly be your efficiency with graphical stuff?

There is the option. Low, high and high with filters (like Lens object and such but its really no so fast).

Well closing groups does help with lessening the CPU requirements. But it needs an awful lot closing down to get any benefit (which I'm gunning for :3)

Like Yami said, maybe a graphic option could help. It wouldn't hurt to try.

You could just ask people will slow computers to upgrade?

Posted by Dr. James MD 12th September, 2008

They should, but that's beside the point.

Sometimes people don't have the money to upgrade their computers...
