New art
Posted 28th Sep 08, by Dr. James MD
Hi, my name is James and I'm going to redraw lots of stuff for this game.

See I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. With The New Satan Sam I tried to cover up my lack of classic pixel art training with stylised visuals, at least for the background art. I thought I knew enough about art and such to be able to go for a more realistic approach with Tormi. But it hasn't worked as I just can't draw big detailed backgrounds.
So the new style is going to be a bit of a step back to Satan Sam in that I'll be using a more abstract approach. Graphics represented more by their purpose and impact than how they'd normally appear. At least this will give me a much more creative artistic license to be able to draw pretty much what comes into mind without worrying too much about realism.

And that's the problem with this game. Realism. I've grounded a few things within logic but it's difficult to balance the surreal parts of some of the game with this relentless realism.

So really it's time to step back, take some LSD or just drink 2 Red Bulls and go a little bit loose with design.

But enough about art. This is the nuze!

+ Been working flat out again on the engine, mostly enhancing the end-user experience by supporting more controllers, having the keyboard instantly useable should a controller be disconnected, tidying up the online and DLC bits (like it used to crash if the connection went down).

+ Wrangled myself another guest track, this time by a DJ style chap and its to be used in the final section of the game. It's a really fantastic piece that fits in well with the rest of the soundtrack. Also got a couple of tracks from MrPineapple's (the main musician) sister.

Also shipped off a demo to some industry execs who were rather pleased with it! Which was a big slice of motivation.

Why are the monsters crapping star dust?

What kind of "industry execs"?

heh you're never going to finish this if you keep redoing things.

Oh btw how would you make the game auto detect a controller anyway? That would be actually be really useful for my game.

If the controller (using the Joystick 2 object) is disconnected then it just switches to keyboard, and if joystick is selected under the options and one is suddenly connected then it starts a loop to find the controller and sets it all back up again.
Think it pretty much does rely on that Joystick 2 object.

man you can't let it down. this is a piece of art, so you can't "BANG!!!" it like that

See I would have to disagree with you on here. I think where you are the most successful is with yours backgrounds. So if size is a problem perhaps you should try making these objects that are giving you so much trouble smaller?

It'll be interesting to see the upcoming art then!
You still think you'll be able to finish this by the end of the year?

Good gravy no. Early '09. The new graphics won't take long, maybe about days worth of art+coding like. The beastily slow bit are bosses and balancing of such.

So your Degrading the graphics... may i ask why god WHY?

Posted by Dr. James MD 29th September, 2008

Not degrading... Just applying some of the arty farty stuff I've learnt onto new abstract objects. Mostly for parallax backgrounds. I'm happy with the fore and midground stuff, but the far-background has been WIP for 2 years now.

why..why do you torture us so by not releasing this game...

You almost redid the graphics more times than I did in Riva Runs, and that didn't get past frame 1

Great looking game, can't wait to play it and i'm sure it'll see a release date judging by the regularity of the Devlogs. Very puuuuurty!
