After noticing people are using bitmaps for sprites and screen shots, I decided to just make this quickly.. Basically, it does exactly what it says on the tin: Converts .bmp files into .png files; which are often greatly smaller, a lot nicer to download, and have no loss of quality (these are true-colour PNGs).

This program will take bmp files that are drag and dropped into it, and convert them into png, saving them as the same file name, just with a changed extension. Drop as many files at a time on as you like.

I hope this'll mean less BMPs being used and such

nice. although paint does have the option to save to png with jpeg gif tiff and bmps. although i cant say whether everyones paint has the same options since my pc is pretty new.

i think windows 95-98's paint only saves as .bmp types, but 98se has multiple file saving formats, yet gif conversion sucks! This is a really good prog, club, Nice to see your active here.

I think ill stick with Paint/MMF, but i hope this helps to cutdown on the .BMP files, theres nothing worse then downloading them on 56k XD. anyway, nice work!

Yes! PNG's rule! I use MSPaint for converting to PNGs, but this would be useful for those who are still using Windows 95 or 98

somebody tried to tell me once that png file were not a good quality to use O_O. png's the smallest/best file size to use while retaining quality.

Clubsoft said that these were TrueColor PNG files. Apparently that flaming idiot didn't use the right program to convert them :P

yea i was gonna say that pre windows ME machines cant save as PNG, but new Paint does.

MSPaint on Win98 1st edition can save as Jpeg, but not PNG.

does mmf even support png? i know (active)picture object does not.. so i still gotta stick with .gif and .bmp

My Win98 SE paint only saves .bmp's. I have PSP 5 though, so it's great for me. :P

This rules! I'm a fan of little cool apps like these!

Posted by AndyUK 14th April, 2004

tgf and mmf wont open png files in the picture editor, they open gifs and jpegs though

little apps rule... used to have a mini lavalamp animation which sat next to the clock on the taskbar.

Club, if you wanted to stop people using BMPs in screenshots, you'd do better to make a serverside converter in ASP using a free library :P

Phizzy: It's true. Want a screenshot?

Ah but can you make a PNG to Bitmap converter? eh?

Posted by Crystal Clear (H.E.S) 15th April, 2004

MMF does infact open .PNG files, you goto: -------------------------- File --> Import --> Bitmap --------------------------

this rocks, well done!

i just use photo editor on conversions, it opens any file format from bmp to tif, in alphabetical order

thanks so much for making this. i run ME, and it's version of paint's conversion to .gif sucks pretty bad. i joined just to download this.

Thanks, alot. :-D I joined this board just for your program. WinME is much faster for my computer and such, so I use WinME, but PNG was (virtually) my only problem. Thanks again! Though when you said you made it quickly, I think I realized how simple it would be... But ah well, less effort for me is good. <>

Simple and effective - perfect

Damn, This is soo useless.
1. MSPaint can save in PNG.
2. Photoshop (that any developer should have) makes it in PNG!

I think Clubsoft made this and released it here for 2 reasons LetoZeth:

1. To emphasise (and make a point) about just how much of a waste of space .bmp's are.

2. To provide a means for those without the tools to perform such conversions. When this was released I didn't have a copy of paint which could save .png, and I certainly was gonna buy or download something shareware or 10 times the size to perform the simple task.

Extremely small, fast and simple. Perfection.
