Not a good platformer, I’m afraid. It’s got a couple of issues:
- Controls are delayed. It’s trying to show momentum, but it’s not getting the point across, and it feels like you’re chained while trying to jump. Now I’m not entirely sure if this is intentional or not, but one thing for sure is it’s not fun to play like this. Any platformer must give you FREEDOM and give you full control over the character that can overcome all of the obstacles in their way, and this game doesn’t give you any other options but to make you struggle while playing
- The platforms are sticky, in other words the collision detection makes it harder to do platforming skills. An example I have is the mid-air platforms. When there’s another separate platform just levitating, you can’t go under it, but rather make your way over it somehow. You also shouldn’t have made the player not leave the play area on the top. I can’t remember if it’s the second or the third level where I found this, but I know for sure there’s a set of levitating platforms on the top left. When you jump on them, you’ll notice that there’s a boundary on the top, meaning you’ll hit your head, falling down quicker.
- The speed of the swing animation doesn’t fit the action. So if you’re trying to hit an enemy, not knowing how good or bad the hitbox is, you basically have to swing earlier before approaching an enemy. I quickly lost my patience when I reached the underground. There’s two turtles(?) that send you high up, giving you a pretty powerful boost to reach heights no ordinary jump could ever reach, and for some reason I can’t seem to figure out when to trigger the boost. Why is it not clear what to do? I tried hitting the turtle and jumping on it, but it only worked when I leasted expected it
- Dashing doesn’t boost you forward when trying to make a jump at the same time. I thought this mechanic would solve most of the platforming engine problems, but it just makes it more confusing.
