Speaking really fast using bad half rhymes whilst barely sticking to a simple beat does not qualify as musical talent.
Isn't poetry:
The aforementioned bad half-rhymes, lyrics composed mostly of ebonics and unimaginative subject matter that compirse most rap songs does not qualify as poetry. Most real musicians are more poetic, such as John Lennon.
Is a load of shite:
It's the best way for a bunch of lazy hacks who never had any real skills or talents to earn the money that real musicians could be earning, in a music industry gone mad.
Your just generalizing rap music, not all rap music is bad, just most of the rappers who rap about their cars and ho's generally give rap music a bad name
e.g: Snoop Dogg, Chingy, G-unit e.t.c i have to agree that most of that is all crap, but not all rap music is.
Twista, Kanye West, 2pac, Outkast, Jay-z e.t.c is some examples of rappers who can talk about something other then their millions of dollars, cars and ho's. Who can be poetic, and who can make some great sounding music.
So you cant say All rap music is shit, yes a big portion of it is but there is some great rappers out there who put out some great music.
Anyway its a taste in music, i myself dont like punk, i cant stand listening to a bunch of 20 year olds singing about loosing their girlfriend, its been done about a million times. yet again, not all punk music is about that and there is some good punk music.
I like the deep guttural sound of some rappers like the ying yang twins, and tupac, lil' john and some others, which is also why I like Rammstein and the german heavy metal scene.
Steve Zissou: Anne-Marie, do all the interns get Glocks?
I'd agree with what Crystal Clear said. This was a stupid post to make... theres no point. I don't like the taste of apricots but I don't make posts about it.
agree with ya teapot. maybe its just the commercial stuff that gets played by baby teens but all i hear is some self indulgent singing with himself about his favourite car/"bitch"/sports wear brand. there is no music talent in there and the bands dont get any mention. HA at Enemineinsmsins "my band" song, do them guys really play the drums and keyboard etc? somehow i doubt it.
i dont understand this whole urban thing going on either. meh im a country boy i wouldnt get it anyways
some rap music is aight, i never liked any of it before this year when my mate got a new sound system in his car and cranked some xzibit on his fully sick subwoofer. in general its shit, all of the rap on mtv is shit, but some of it can sound pretty hot.
I really love good hip hop, hip hop isnt only music, its a culture. A culture that is all about expressing what they feal about this and that. But some have found a way to earn a lot of cash on this culture, and is is usually that peapules hear on the radio and see on mtv. You should listen to some underground hip hop music who are still proceeding with what hip hop truly is about.
Try listen to:
"Louis Logic"
"gangstarr"
"People under the stairs"
"Blackalicios"
Some of the old albums to "Black eyed peas"
Isn't big Isn't clever Rants too much Generalises
etc, etc.

"Say you're hanging from a huge cliff at the top of mt. everest and a guy comes along and says he'll save you, and proceeds to throw religious pamphlets at you while simultaniously giving a sermon." - Dustin G
Yeah I found that out last night, that really sucks as I think it will probably mean the end of the Wu-Tang clan. Anyone here like Del the funky Homosapian?
Thing that gets me is, people are always saying that because I am 14, I should be listening to rap in my bedroom 24/7, truth is, I dont like rap in gen.
what i dont like about rap fans; they seem to think that everyone wants to listen to it. at my college a few idiots just played it all the time, muting whenever a tutor came in. so we then had a no music rule enforced.
the same when they play it out loud in thier cars. the next time some wannabe speeds past in his modded Punto (lol) playing his music my phone is going through his window. then ill ring him and tell him to shut the hell up.
if you like music; listen to it. if others dont; then shut the hell up.
bloodhound gang do a lot of rapping in thier earlier stuff but they're pretty clever in thier rhymes... and they play thier own instruments (quite well too).
"Ol' Dirty Bastard died on Saturday." didnt know that, only song i heard from Ol' Dirty Bastard was "baby i got ya money", my brother used to love that song.
Ok, it is hard to do, but that doesn't make it a talent and if it is, then it is definitely not a musical talent.
As for generalising, musically rap is rap. Lyrically, I have heard most of the rappers mentioned, and a lot of 'underground' rap and it is all self-obsessed rubbish (so is emo, which is hyper shite).
Another problem is that rap is based so much on image, and that's not just mainstream rap. Underground rap is mainly based on the image of being a struggling artist and gangster.
Also, I hate the way that rappers flood the music industry, it's like asking for wedges and getting chips, rap isn't music. Because of rappers, real musicians are finding it harder to get record contracts.
How can you say that rap is shit and isn't 'real music', but also say
"Because of rappers, real musicians are finding it harder to get record contracts."?
They wouldn't get the contracts if their music didn't sell.
So I don't think its up to you to decide what 'real music' is.
Just because you don't like it, it doesn't make it crap. You're not jesus and never will be.
"Ok, it is hard to do, but that doesn't make it a talent and if it is, then it is definitely not a musical talent."
Teapot, do you know anything about music? Rap has rhythm, lyrics, and its sung.
Also, to answer your question, yes, if it is hard to do, then it can be considered a talent.
All mainstream music sucks arse. If record companies stopped telling impressionable kiddies what to like, and all artists sold their music independently, the industry would be a much better place. I did a rant about it for our zine.
Some rappers are good some are bad. I mean their is more talent in it than just talking. People have to like your voice, your rhymes, and your style. Most people that say it sucks cant even do it. Freestyling is a skill, for you to just start rhyming off the top of your head you have to have some skills or practice in it. Rap songs are basicly poems read with music in the background and sometimes including singers in them. To say it isnt music because its not country or singing all in it doesnt make it not music. There isnt just one style I mean its not like others but its still a type. I actually enjoy some of it, not all of it. I agree though that some are not as good as others who arent famous. Then again theres always gonna be someone better or someone better who didnt get to make it.
The main problem I have with rap music is that most of it is not defined enough to make it original. I suppose you could say the same about the mainstream music industry in general, and I'd agree with you.
Everything pretty much sounds the same.
Rap is fucking gay, and it isn't culture. I sincerely doubt that black people in africa are "busting out phat beats" around the fire. Back in the time of slavery it was a compleatly different type of music. Rap started in the late 70's and has been adopted by the big record companies as a tool. What kind of tool do you ask? It's a tool to hold the black man back. Ever see an extreamly gangsta person make it through highschool? Vary rarely, and if he/she does, do they ever go to college? Even rarer. Most black people you see that are living decently, that aren't rappers or comedians, do they act like complete idiots or use retarded slang or anything like that? No. Not only does it do that, but it also creates things like in the topic about racism. So don't support Rap, you are supporting racist white people.
Trouble is, the same has happened with other genres too, rock music is being made into manufactured crap by the money grabbing record companies, as is hip-hop. No culture is sacred these days, I just try to stay open minded, do what I wanna do rather than what a culure would do and listen to whatever song I like no matter whatever the genre.
The guy that helped Metallica with the Black album made them forget everything that Mustane and Burton taught them.
MTV is not MTV anymore, the only time they show anything remotly good is on Headbangers ball, and that's only a 1 hour show that is on 2 times a week, the rest is Hip Hop Hoes and Punk Pansies. Sometimes they get a good band on like Muse, but the rest of the time it sucks.
MTV has brainwashed Ozzy.
People can't tell what good music is these days. They seem to believe what MTV tells them too, and keep them thinking it's good. Thank god for 94.7 here in Chicago and some other stations too, but it's slowly dieing.

Anyone here like Del the funky Homosapian?
Frick yea, didn't know TDCers had such good taste in rap. Louis Logic owns, and so does Blackalicious and Del.
If you think rap is nothing but what you see on TV, than you are sadly mistaken. Any sterotype you can come up for rap, I could probably come up with an equal stereotype for rock. If I did what you did, judging rap to be nothing but what I see on TV, I'd think rock was complete bullshit because Simple Plan, Good Charolette and Blink-182 are all reigning.
You think coming up with these lyrics is easy? The majority of rap isn't about "bitches and gats". Lets see you outdo Common, MF Doom, Mos Def, earlier Nas, Pharoahe Monch, Del and whoever else. Rap isn't just a simple A/B rhyme scheme anymore, either. Rappers will switch it up, and throw in metaphors, similies and punchlines. But what does that matter if their flow sucks or they have no energy on the mic?
And shit, some rappers are putting out some of the most original albums this year. (Madvilliany, Deltron 3030, Kool Keith, and MM.. Food come to mind)
yea but Radix, a lot of moshers/goths whatever they like to be called in this day and age all say "i hate maintstream music" then go and play Blink182 thinking they are different because they like rock.
me? i really dont like anything modern mainstream, hell i never listen to the radio or watch TV i havnt a clue whos big at the moment but from what i can tell its all about image and sex and drugs. gimme some Bowie anyday. gimme music that isnt bothered about gangsters wanting to look like they own a city, or some teeny singers with guitars who say they are the biggest thing in rock since the Beatles.
Mainsteam rap culture has blown out into ridiculous proportions. It's basically getting more and more similiar.
All you have to do is look at the stupid video clips they make, listen to the structure of each song, and get a general feel for what the lyrics are say and you'll realise most of it's the same old shit. You know...you're driving around in fat assed cars, playing some fat assed beats, and picking up fat assed biatches.
Why can't it be like the good old days of music where a seemingly innocent song like Hotel California can be about drug addiction, or Puff The Magic dragon can mean something completely differently. Subtlety and depth are wasted on this newage rap music I feel. Music just isn't the same, and is suffering.

What the fuck does that have to do with anything? They can listen to Brittany fucking Spears for all I care, it has nothing to do with anything I said.
Yeah, Muggus. They were good times. I mean, even something like 'Good Vibrations'... the explicit message is as clear as day, and nobody thought of it.
Although I agree that mainstream is a load of tosh, you still have more good new singers/bands coming through (IMO) than before (c)rap gained popularity. People who know how to sing properly and know what a decent tune sounds like. (e.g. Jamie Cullum, Katie Melua, I'll mention them because nobody else will. Oh, and the Downbeats (secret reference))
a few good rappers i suggest to you who are probably best lyricists out there:
Nas, Kanye West(listen to "thru the wire"), Common(havent heard him, but my bro reccomends it) and a bit of Jay-Z. all are probably the best rappers out there, and they dont rap about the same old shit.
