The machine's got to read it somehow. I'm sure you can force the cover back and stick a pen in there or something.

And I'm sure you can dunk your cartridge in a bucket of water, stomp on it 37 times, and then burn it, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen.

ive been through this before, how in the hell are carts going to be the downfall of a DS? people dont give a shit whether its on an UMD disc or cart, and no way its going to be a disadvantage to the DS, LMAO its going to be a HUGE advantage.
*You can play GBA games on it(will pull in many gamers)
*Less battery power used(as others said)
*you can SAVE on a cart, which is a HUGE advantage. people with a PSP will have to go out and spend some extra money to buy a memory stick (LESS $$$ and more conveniant)
And the advantages of a UMD disc is........... ummmm, im still trying to think of that

People don't care what medium the game is on, but developers do care. PSP gives them 14 times the storage space to work with. That's 14 times the textures, geometry, music, cinematics, etc. Remember how the Playstation had all those RPGs and the Nintendo 64 had next to none? Remember how the Nintendo 64 had crappy midi sound and minimal voice work and the Playstation had orchestrated music and voice acting? The difference between 128MB and 1,800MB is enormous in terms of game content.

If the Carttridge only holds 128MB, than thats more then enough.

For example, probably the best game of all time which is classified as an RPG/Adventure is Zelda: Ocarina of Time. My Zelda: OOT rom is 32MB,
Graphically ripped shit on most Playstation games, Musically ripped shit on PS games and it is only 32MB, which is a 1/4 of the cartridges FULL capacity.
So if one of the "Greatest games of all time"(in my oppinon it is) is only a 1/4 of a full cartridge, then that is surely more then enough.
(If youve ever played Zelda: OOT then youd realise it aint no small game )

If we're going to play the "find one awesome game to defend my argument" game, try fitting Final Fantasy VII (my all time favorite game) on a cart. Ain't gonna happen.

I have no idea how big Final Fantasy VII is so i cant say, but that was just my comparison to how much a DS cartridge can hold.

look at it this way, Golden Sun 2 (possible THE greatest 2D RPG of all time, IMO) fit on either a 64mbit or a 128mbit cart. personally i think it was the 64 as 128 carts hadnt reared thier massive heads yet.

anyways its an insanely massive game. if the DS has an RPG even half the size of that then its gonna killer. instead of having a full orchestral soundtrack or pre-rendered FMV's (didnt they die out?) its gonna have some outstanding games from the likes of Camelot, GameFreak and Nintendo themselves who really dont give much damn about the size of games. only the quality of games.

sounds to me like the PSP is just gonna be a home console in your hands, which is pointless because there already ARE home consoles. i come home from wherever i am, slap on a big loud 3D game crank up the amp and play. Halo 2 on a small screen would be crap, as would Metal Gear Solid/GTA etc. they would never get the same atmosphere. however something meant for simple fun like Prime Hunters, Mario 64 are all games that dont need or suit being playing loud and proud. another thing sony didnt think about... just like thier Atrac encoding (why thier MD and MP3 products are seriously failing) and the pointlessnes of some of the features on thier Clie's it seems like they have this good idea and want to be the most powerful, but havnt fully grasped exactly what they are doing.
and who can forget DVD+R/RW? part of sony's doing. i wonder why they want to divide up markets? oh yea... money.

kirby final fantasy 7 isnt very big. the onyl reason it took up 3 discs is because of the shitty bitmap 2D rendered backgrounds and the now dated/ugly fmv sequences. ff7 is the most overrated game ever, its average at best. im a ff fan, ff7 is nowhere near the best... go FF5/8/10

basically, as long as there is no fmv / voice work, a DS rpg can be just as long as a PSP one (they only make games so long) also IT SHOULD BE NOTED , that the 1gigabit carts are only for 1st gen software, "DS games are capable of holding up to 1gigabit and well beyond" well beyond mates, super mario 64 was 8 mb, ocarina was 32mb, Resident evil 2 (on n64) was 64mb with all the fmv plus higher res graphics. so what took the psOne 2 cds to fill, capcom squeezed onto a 64mb cart (with no loss of quallity). cartridges are GOOD.

im not a fanboy i swear playstation 1 and 2 are great, i just think the psp is a peice of shit. thats not to say that it wont be succesful.

We had a big discussion about this on another forum. It's not the Nintendo Developers System, or the Nintendo Dual Screen, it's the Nintendo DS.

That's because all music is COPYRIGHTED and costs monies to play. The RIAA are scared you bad net people are going to hack into the trailers and steal their music! YOU'LL KILL THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AND YOU'LL BE LIABLE FOR ALL OF IT (or as much as they can get out of you)!

I got the DS on the release date and I got Mario 64 DS with it too. About the cartridges they are so tiny around the size of a memory card for the GC but thinner. I looked up and found out that the carts hold more than 1Gb. So I mean they got alot of space to work with. Also I love the system I've been playin it none stop. I've already beat the Mario Story now all I need to do is get all 150 stars.

yea thing about carts is they can be upgraded oh so easily. GBA games started at 32mbit for the launch titles but Pokemon Ruby/FireRed and co all take up a pleasant 256mbit (or 128, not sure which). at the time 128 was unfeasable i remember nintendo saying "maybe the GB2 will be able to store that much" or something along them lines.

my last mention about cart pros; you can get funky addons (camera/light sensors/tilt measurers)... but the DS carts seem too small for that. meh at least they can live on with the regular GBA slots
