Has anyone else pulled out TGF and looked at the source or built some levels? I think it'd be cool for someone to revamp the game with a bunch of new levels. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then head over to http://www.klik-me.com and download it, you'll need winrar or something other than winzip to extract it, but it's an awesome game.
Yeah, I discovered that a while back. The same goes for the author's other games, Teppoman and Teppodon. Kinda hard to understand some of it though, as the author is Japanese.
Nikujin would especially benefit from new levels, as the current ones, while they make full use of your moves, are a tad too unfair on the player (and the moving sword attack has many times caused accidental deaths x.x).
Zeb's too clunky to ever be fun, anyway. I think I could do some cool stuff with this game (new graphics, attacks, enemies and a story), but it'll have to wait until after new years at the earliest.

I dunno, would anyone be interested with making more of a fleshed out game of Ninjuken? Revamp the graphics a little, make a crapload of new levels, etc.
While the idea of remaking the game sounds cool, I would honestly rather just work on my own projects. Plus, I'm not sure how I would feel if I were the author of the game, and some random people started taking my work and changing it. Although he must have had some reason for including the open source of the game...
I'm going to get cracking on some sweet sweet level design for this game tonight.
@Radix - How hard would it be to add a level editor in to this game? Say we were to crank the resolution up to 640*480, cause I'm still not too sure how well TGF would handle loading level and scrolling, as my attempts to combine the two have been..sad.
Well, I'd be doing it with MMF, which scrolls better. I don't have TGF anymore.
From the looks of it it'd be pretty easy to do a level editor. There's not much in the way of hidden objects (and he does them the same way I do anyway), and everything's nice and tile-based.
I shouldn't think so. I only had a quick look, and the only time I saw the direction calculator was in reference to a hidden object, and those can be placed if they aren't automatically. Things like that'd just be a case of addressing when you get to them, I doubt it would be a major problem. The aim would just to get a working level editor for ordinary levels, not the fancy stuff. Bosses and such might be hard-coded and accessed in the premade missions, while level-edited stuff would be accessed separately from the menu.
Well, if I were modifying it myself (and I probably will) I'd be adding more weapons and stuff, and probably objective-based missions.
I don't really see the point of a level editor if it's open source. Not many people use them and it'd be easier just to open it up in mmf if it's made so you can easily add levels.
Just cause level packs and such would be easier. Also those who play the game and don't have MMF/TGF would be able to make levels. I'll probably upload a version with the levels I made later, had a bit of fun this afternoon.
Well, maybe. If you'd like to do a level editor I'm sure everyone'd thank you. I'll be sure to add it to my version if and when I get around to doing it.
Hmm, maybe we should share info on the engine if we ever get around to pulling it apart. I'm in the process of attempting to rename things into something more..friendly.
Edit: Man this engine is friggin sweet! I can learn alot from this.
Ugg, gonna do a bit more translating on this tonight, and then I'll send it over to you radix.
On another note, I got 4 levels done yesterday, now I'm working on my first boss battle. Hope to get about another 4-5 levels done tonight, after I get the boss done.
Yeah I've looked at the source. Some knowledge of the Japanese language can really help. A dictionary too (www.freedict.com).
Meh, but the game wasn't that hard. You can finish the levels before the first boss without being hit and without killing people easily (except for the third level, in that one I keep getting hit). Though I'm stuck at level, ehh, the 3rd level after the first boss.
But anyway, Shab what are you going to change? And why are you working on that first boss battle? That one was easy enough already.
Yeah, I'm making my own levels, but that's about it, the ones I have done now are pretty easy, and my boss is a little harder to kill than tha dual sword dude was. I'm not going to change much more, but I'm a sucker for level design. I've been making 3-4 levels a day, with each boss taking a day, so it's not taking a whole hell of alot of time. I wanna bump that level count really high though.
Waahaa finally I finished Nikujin! YAY! Phew, but now I'm really angry though and my throat hurts because of screaming to the monitor and stuff. Phew, I'll have some tea now ^^
I forgot the game at home, so I don't have a screenshot, but I finished the Boss, it's a c wheeled cart with some big ass spikes on the front that tries to crush you against walls.
