G'day, I just dropped in to ask if anyone knows how to convert a Midi or possible a Wav file into a MOD? My Co-Worker has been working on the music for our game, but we don't like the low quality of Midis. we tried Mp3's, though they sound so much better are much to big.
We're not really sure how MODs work or if you can even convert into them. Or if you have to simply program the song into a mod specificly. Any help here would be great.
Mods are kinda like MIDIs except instead of computer generated instruments they generally use samples, i.e Wav files, so they can sound much better than MIDIs. So you could in theory convert the notes to MOD but the instruments would need to be replaced with samples to improve on quality. I think so anyway. I'm not an expert on these things.
Im sure i remember finding a few programs that claim to convert midi to wav and wav to mod and whatever else, ive tried loads and none really work as well a i want. I do remember getting some snes spc files to midis but the instruments were all made into piano and nothing in the midi instrument list sounded quite right when i changed them.
The only thing I can suggest is hours of google searching, there are a few free trials for programs like this among the mp3 to wav converters.
Use ModTracker. It can open up the MIDIs, and you can change the notes into customised sound effects (ie, chipesque tunes). Converting a WAV file into a MOD is quite pointless though, as the file size will only decrease ever so slightly. Convert WAV to MP3 though, and you're laughing (and yes, ModTracker supports this too)
Our very own resident admin Wong is a master at MODs, he could give you some pointers
Download Modplug Tracker. It can import Midi by simply oen it in MPT . And can save it as a Mod then .
Modplug Tracker uses the GML ( general Midi Library ) for default midi songs , and grabs its samples . If you are not this lucky with the quality , you can download a soundfont with better quality soundfonts , or download samples. And then replace the not this good sounding samples in the mod by better ones . Especially drums sounds horrible with the default midi set ...
Tip for importing midi into Modplug Tracker : Save the Midi with Speed 172 . Otherwise the midi will not fit to the grid , and may sound strange in MPT. You can then fit the speed of the mod once it is imported .
Modplug Tracker . I would suggest to download the version OpenMPT V117RC1 release . It contains a few bugfixes compared to the version 116 :
Beware : Collecting good sound fonts and samples can keep you busy for weeks or months
Mod versus MP3 . A mod is still not this good as a MP3. Even when you are able to work with VST Plugins in MPT . Still, those VST settings will not work in the Mod when you use the mod outside MPT. Just when rendering to wave you will be able to store VST effects . The only effects that can be used outside MPT is some of the DirectX ones . But you donīt have this much control over it ...
But yeah, MOD is ways smaller than MP3 . And sounds better than Midi. Because it sounds equal at every PC
It can melt different mods together. Which decreases the filesize when the mods contain the same samples . And i think the ModFX3 Modfusion EX Plugin is able to play WSF files . Because it īs the same person which developed both , the plugin and the WSF format : Josh Whelchel ...
