Well, my comp's already assembled. I just wanna upgrade the processor and graphics card. Now I've already got the graphics card... but the problem is, there's this glue stuff on one of the chips. That other Geforce I took out had a fan at the same location, so now, I'm wondering whether I need a fan for it or not. I mean, if it didn't come with a fan, it can't be THAT important, right? But personally, I don't wanna risk my expensive RM 135 (about $40+ or so) Geforce 4 MX-4000 blowing up, so I still want that fan in there.

Question is.. how do I put the fan there? I tried just sticking the thing onto that chip, but it doesn't stick.

Same thing for the processor. I'll probably upgrade my scrap Pentium 3 to a scrap Pentium 4 or something.

If there's thermal paste on the chip, it probably wants a fan. There are plenty of ways to mount a fan, but I'd have to actually get in there to tell you how to do it on your machine. However, you might try looping cable ties through the mounting holes on the fan and wrapping them around the card (gently).

The MX-4000 doesn't come with a fan... IIRC it should have a large heatsink on it. Check your carpet for a large metal object with lots of points.

(take a picture and maybe we can suggest some things, like sending it back to get a replacement)

Didn't he say he stole it?

Yeah... I meant heatsink/fan combo. Anyway.

That metal thingy was supposed to be there? I thought it was a wrapper, like the plastic around a candy in a box. Then you put a fan on it?

You can, but you probably don't need to if the airflow in your case is alright (it probably is). The heatsink should be enough on its own.

Hmm... airflow in my case is horrible. I don't think that a fan would help

BTW, that metal thingy kinda looks the one in this pic:

Is that a heat sink?

From what I remember it doesn't put out much heat (no more than, say, a hard drive) so you should be fine. As long as you stick that heatsink back on, of course, or the chip will melt as soon as you do anything 3D...
