$399 for those of you too lazy to click.
But with recent info that (at least in japan anyway) the system will not ship with a hard drive; which is REQUIRED to use the system, expect to pay more if you want to actually USE your PS3.

Ouch.

It'll be the games and not the price that shifts units. I'd happily pay an extra $100 (£50) for a console which will play more, better games.

Or instead of getting a PS3, go down to a car boot sale and pick up a Mega Drive for a tenner.

Yeah, but selling a game system for that much, then making them buy another piece just so the first part will work. I won't buy it at that price, that's just too damned much, I know a lot of people who think the same. Here's hoping the X360 has a lower price.

...who buys a console as soon as it comes out, anyway? Ok, a lot of people do =P but I think it's a waste of money. There's also the fact that it takes a while before you start seeing a steady flow of games for a new console. I'm sticking with my current console (PS2) until the developers start abandoning it altogether.

I do agree that selling the PS3 without a required component smacks of cheek, though. Here's betting the hard drives wont come cheap...

PS - Alex, it's called an Emulator =P *runs*

I bought my PS2 off eBay last year for 75 quid. Fuck buying new, they're grossly overprised anyway.

why dont they just ship it with the hard drive and add on the extra $$ in the cost? cause i doubt theyre gonna rely on another company to make a hard drive. pelican anyone? also theyre said to be losing about 1 billion (or was it a million, cant remember) just by selling it at that price. personally after i get twilight princess for gcn im abandoning consoles and starting on building mes an awsome computer.

heh, same price as PS2 when it came out, though that didn't require you to pay extra for a neccessary component.

The Ps2 was $299, at least here in the states.
They said the reason for not including it is that there will be many different sizes avaliable. I've heard they start at 20GB and might go up to 80 or 100.

I bet we will pay more in the UK and europe probably £300, because they think we are stupid and can't figure out exchange rates.

I'm another someone that waits for the price to go down, but also waits to see what games are available.

For the ps2 i payed £180 and got gta3 and a dvd film (the krays) but i had to wait a week to get a memory card £30

Luckily with my gamecube purchase i got a bargain, this was 2 years ago or so and it was £70 with Luigis mansion a memory card and controller.

Phizzy: I don't even have a PS2

Shab: I thought the same thing too on the HD... but what LEGITIMATE uses will there be for the hard drive? Game saves? a couple of megabytes perhaps... more for replays possibly, but still not near a gig. game demos? downloadable game demos? maybe but I have a hard time believing they'd be above a gigabyte.

for the other side of the coin, lets ask the 1337 xbox kidz, who have the LoTR trilogy, Metallica's whole discography and a nude hack of Dead or Alive on their HDs.

I'm actually thinking that console gamers will be able to get their first "real" taste of user made mods this generation. It started last gen. with the XBox and the nude hack and such. That's the one thing that makes PC gaming better than console for me, mods. My GTA Vice city is so modded it's incredible.

I never really found any uses to mods except for Unreal Tournament 2004 which I play every once & a while on PC. Other then that, I enjoy playing games the way they were made, without mods.

That's the same with me Shab, I love mods. But I don't have a state of the art computer. My laptop at the moment is good enough to play Half life 2, Counter strike source, San Andreas etc. but it doesn't look as good as if I was using a better computer. I wouldn't buy a computer to just play games either, that's why I think I'll buy a console... but after the price comes down

Must be nice, my comp isn't capable of running much these days, I need to buy a new processor, as I blew the old one out and now I'm stuck with 800mhz with my wonderful DDR 333 ram running at a lowly 100mhz and being decidedly un DDRish.
