I just bought some Sony PC speakers after my last ones went off to speaker heaven. The problem: they HUM when connected to the mains and powered on. The humming happens even if they're not connected to the PC. The adaptor is built in to one of the speakers, but both hum in equal proportion. It's really pissing me off. I've never had PC speakers that hum before. And it may just be me, but I think it makes the output sound crap as well. Anyone else have this problem or should I send the buggers back?
My speakers have a slight low hum when they're on, but I just turn em off when I'm not using them, and if I'm using them they're playing music so I can't hear the hum.
Higher quality speakers won't have a hum though because it will slightly affect sound quality.
Mine make all sorts of weird noises when I leave them on for a while. I think my sister must've poured Rice Crispies and milk into my subwoofer or some shit. . .

i had some funky speakers that would pick up baby monitors, cordless phone signals, and radio transmissions from the military base Camp Smith on the next ridge over. it would only pick it up on the lowest two levels, so if you tried to turn up the volume to hear what people were saying, it would stop.
i got rid of those and now my new ones dont 'hum'.

I'd send em back and exchange them for a different brand, a lot of cheapo speakers arent magnetically shielded so you get annoying humming and whining noises.
If they hum load from being brand new, no offence but they are pants.
As Alex Culshaw said they are not usually magnetically shielded, and the power supllies in them are total cack, they never have a big enough resevoir capacitor and very little filtering, allowing the supply to waver around the mains 50Hz producing the hum.
Solid state technology produces a lot of noise (jonsons noise) anyway, thats why a lot of bands and audio professionals use valve amplifiers.
To be honest i havent brought modern audio equipment for about 8 years, as IMHO its complete pants to the old stuff.
If it happened to myself I would buy and old amp and some speakers just for my PC, which i have done plus you get the benefit of more watts as PC speakers are usually rated in PMPO, the ones that came with my PC was rated at 400 Watts and had 2W RMS speakers (i took them apart ) my current speakers are rated at 40W RMS each, there about a foot and half tall each so 400W is bs...
Those are the ones I got; Sony, which I would expect to be not shit. Well that's me taught. They are magnetically shielded as well. I'll send them back and get some different ones elsewhere.
Hmm well, actually, there IS something wrong with my boxes, but it's not humming. Sometimes I can listen to foreign radio using my speakers (even when I turn the volume down). Till now, I've heard German, French and Russian radio.
