I found out about it yesterday, but until more people I know start using it, I'll stick with AIM. Till then though, my names GoldenSonic3000, so if you want to message 'me', there you go.

Who's going to migrate way from their current IM software to use this? All my friends use MSN and I don't envisage a max exodus to Google Talk any time soon. I don't know what Google are aiming to do with this. Everyone is cemented into their current software: if you download and use this one, it'll just be because it's a gimmick. I'd use it if it let me sign in and talk to people on the MSN protocol, until then, I don't see the point.

Thats exactly how I see it, because Yahoo Messenger doesnt seem to be doing any good againced AIM or MSN either, so like you said Pete, I dont see why Google even tries. These 2 messengers (MSN & AIM) are already near, if not already at the top of messager service, so I doubt anyone's going to jump down to a lower level if new people are all at AIM & MSN, & people using MSN & AIM arent going to jump down to anything else unless all there friends do as well.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if GoogleTalk caught on. Gmail seems to have created a buzz amoung some of my friends and other things Google related seem to be "cool" for some reason (maybe because they are, such as the GoogleEarth program). And Google is such a popular portal, if they promoted something like that on thier homepage and it was actually a good messenger I bet a lot of people would switch to it. Also I'm always reading about new google services in major news magazines for some reason.

All the other stuff Google has done has had a unique selling point. Gmail gave 1 GB of space, for example. In fact, what else have they done that isn't somehow search related? Not a lot is the answer. Google Maps provides an interface for local business search, and Picasa and Blogger were around before Google bought them. What's unique about Google Talk? It being Google isn't enough. If it were VERY good, the best IM program ever created, then sure, that's unique, but I don't see how they can re-invent the wheel the same way they did with search. Time will tell, of course.

This isn't a new instant messenger, it's just a Jabber frontend that lets you use your GMail login. I already use AIM and MSN, and since Trillian supports Jabber anyway, I'd use Google Talk as well if it were able to sign in over my proxy.

I go with the flow, and since AIM seems to be the regional favorite in Hawaii, I wont be switching soon.

I heard on the news yesterday that if you have a Gmail account you can make free phone calls and send free text messages to anyone in the world.

You can't make phone calls from it, it just uses VoIP. You can do that in MSN Messnger for a start. I read Google explicitly stating they weren't going after the internet phone call market. As for free SMS, that would be cool, it's not in there at the moment though.

I heard that Google instant messenger's special feature is that it will be able to connect to other messaging systems, im not sure if it could connect on to the networks of MSN though.

i've been playing around with it for about 30 minutes. oh, and i also tested out Google Talk. it's pretty cool, i guess, but if they do add support for other im clients (something like trillian) it'll definately become the most popular program available
