I've accepted the fact that I was going to be bald since I was old enough to realize that it was going to happen to me at a young age. I was about 8 when I realized this, so I've had some time to "prepare" or actually not care. I'm just gonna enjoy it while I have it.

Phizzy,how am I a sucker?

If most people had a choice between hair and no hair, they'd choose to keep it.

Hows taking one tablet a day to maintain your hair so bad?

Yes, Noodle, you are right. Pete's mom does have the baldness gene if her genotype is xX. However, that means that she is a carrier. In order for a woman to be affected by a sex-linked trait, they need two recessive genes. So for her to be bald she'd have to be homozygous recessive (xx). No, he would not have a 1/2 chance, because Pete's possible genotypes would be: Xx, xx, XY, and xY. xY appears once out of four possible outcomes. I think you are referring to a pedigree about the tree.

I don't understand. Why is there X, x and Y? Shouldn't it be just X and x? Where does Y come into it?

Anyway, I still think Pete's gonna go bald.

The Y chromosome decides the sex of an organism. If you have an XX combination, then the organism is a female. If you have an XY combination, then the organism is a male. That is why it is easier for men to receive genetic, x-linked disorders because we only have one X. If a woman has one recessive x, then the dominant X protects her from the disease, but she can pass a disorder onto her offspring because she is a carrier.

"Pete's possible genotypes would be: Xx, xx, XY, and xY."

So then his actual genotype would be either XY or xY, because Xx and xx are female, giving him 1/2 chance.

You're right, noodle. Dumb mistake by me. I was considering all offspring combinations and didn't take into consideration the sex. Thanks for pointing that out, Noodle. Sorry, Pete, you're more likely to become bald.
