Sounds like the default movement to me, that always happens.
One way around it might be to always set a small detector box to your active object's feet and don't have the collision with backdrop take place unless both your active object AND the small box pass the test. If the box is small enough then your active object's arms (for example) won't get hung up and stuck on your ledges anymore. That will clear up some problems right away if you do it right.

Make either your own platform movement (when you're ready for it), or do what Del Duio suggested.
