Ok so, as the topic says I'm new here. This isn't to say I haven't seen some of the games here on other sites, or that I haven't sat down and checked out what can be done with MMF...but more so, my question is about what it can't do.

I only just got the program, as a very belated birthday gift, from the same person who bought me Klik & Play years back. Problem was, yes I used it and made games, but I did not have an internet connection, nor did I really know about the whole community, till around the time it apparently fell apart(or vanished...or whatever happened to it). I found out later on, when downloading Destruction Carnival and few other titles much later on.

So I'm sitting here, noting that MMF has been out for quite some time, MMF 2 is about to be unleashed, and I'm wondering, is it worth getting into? I mean I do want to design and create games badly, but at the same time, I don't want to start working on somthing, to find out a week into production, a tool that is 10 fold better then what I'm just breaking in with, is offically out and has made my efforts futile at best.

Beyond that, with Klik & Play I always seemed to run into a serious wall, be it trying to figure out how to do a scrolling background(aka platform engine), or have it so that I could have over 10 lines of dialoge, each with multiple choices that lead into new dialoge depending on what you picked...without having to kill myself with trial and error. There were more problems besides the ones I mention, but the question is- What can't MMF do, and I don't mean in depth 3D...I mean, what sort of game would be impossible with it as is, and would MMF 2 really offer more options and ability to make games, MMF at the moment can not.

Sorry if this post seems complex or perhaps asks a bit too much, but I feel I must somehow break the ice that I'm a newbie here, but do it in...I donno, I guess a interesting way.

Anyway, thanks for reading, and if you post, that as well...and umm, Hi everyone ;

No matter how easy to pick up the Click range is, you still have to work at it to be able to produce a quality game/application in the end. You've recognised that it's not intended for 3D environments, but apart from that, I think that pretty much anything is possible if enough thought is put into it. (As for your scrolling backgrounds, they were added in TGF and have stayed ever since.) MMF handles the translation of what you want to happen into actual code - but to do that, you need to know what you want from it.

The big thing that bothers me is that we can't use a tile-based graphics engine (of course I still love the bitmapped sprites, but I think both should be there) we can't use a tile-based engine with bankswitching. THat would mean animated backgrounds and it'd take up less space. OF course, though, the bitmapped sprites don't limit us to colors only some pallettes have.

But you CAN make a tile-based graphics engine with bank switching and animated backdrops, Bibin. What do you think the Text Blitter is for?

Hmmm... to me it seems that whenever there's a major shortcoming in MMF, there are numerous ways of working around it, you just have to figure out what they are. I think MMF2 is going to deal with a number of the old shortcomings, making it easier to take a game farther, initially, as well as provide some more cool features to play with...

But if you have already been GIVEN MMF, I see no harm in getting into it now, and if you find yourself hitting a wall, you can always upgrade later.

i agree. Have a play with MMF and see if you like it. There is little point in upgrading to MMF 2 right away, unless you really like the products and want more power .

There are alternative game creation programs, and different ways to make games, however your mileage with them will depend on the amount of effort and time that you are willing to invest in making a game!

So if you got MMF for free, you really have nothing to lose but time . Oh and if you have any MMF related questions, it is best to ask them on the CT forums (You are more likely to get help there).

Ah, well that basically answers my questions. At the moment, I'm attempting to remake a old childhood favorite of mine, a Commodore 64 game called "Realms of Impossiblity", which is basically just a 2D platformer, which uses Isometric style backdrops to create the illusion of a 3D world...but at it's core it was just a platform game. A really hard platform game

Always loved the game, so I figured why not remake it. Not a huge project, but big enough for my first time out the gate with MMF.

Now all I gotta do is re-learn pixel art, and I'm good to go.

You don't have to fear working in MMF if you just got it, because MMF2 is backwords compatable. You just need to check for extensions that hav been recompiled for MMF2 if you want to port your game over. Thats 1 of many reasons to try to limit your extension use, by finding harder, but in the end, more effective and stable methods to do stuff.

That is an example of how you make a good first post.

MMF can do almost anything, i still use The games factory and have had little problems with it, It is much more limiting that MMF is.

Not all of us have MMF. I have TGF.
